Susmis Swamps

Known by most as the Savage Mire, this long stretch of desolate swamp marsh expands out from the Blacktide Bay to the mountains in the west. Inhospitable, everything is gray, damp, and squishy. Water is everywhere, though typically in narrow channels that are only inches to a few feet deep and anywhere from a few feet to 30 yards across. Hillocks rise out of the mire, creating close packed islands of "dry" ground where short trees (no more than 30 feet tall) grow. The land is farm-able if you can find a large enough plot above ground, but the food that is produced tends to be bland compared to what can be grown in more pleasant areas.   Where settlements have been created, villagers have done a variety of things to make the land more livable. The main things are to move earth from other sections to fill in water ways and create larger sections of land to places houses, shops, and other structures on. Where infeasible or just too much work, small bridges can be found all over the place, allowing easy access across the many channels and rivulets that crisscross the settlements.   There are three main reasons to have a settlement in the mire. Fishing, if near the Blacktide Bay. Trapping, specifically for small beaver like rodents and alligators, and logging, as all of the waterways (once mapped) make it easy to move the lumber from where it was cut back to the village and eventually to larger settlements where it can be sold.
