Gal-Aralu

Gal-Aralu, known also as The Jewel of the West, or simply The Jewel. It is a major commercial center which connects the populous realms of The Middle Kingdoms to the untamed wilderness of the Western Lands.   The city is divided into three rows of elevation, which can be sealed off from each other in the event of invasion or unrest.

The High Row

The High Row sits atop the northern cliffs, high above the waters of the The Gulf that Hungers. Its lanes and plazas are open and well-guarded, and surrounded by beautiful greenery.
  • The Palace Grounds
  • The Tribune's Seat and its vergants gardens are located here. It is a highly guarded district, and entrance into the palace grounds is usually by invite only.
  • Patrician's Ward
  • Home to the three Great Houses and the lower nobility of Gal-Aralu.
  • The Arcanum Spire
  • A center of magical learning and research, where enrollment is a privilege usually reserved to the children of nobility.
  • The Necropolis
  • This area houses the great mausoleum known as Martyrhome. The resting place of previous Tribunes and the mausoleums of the Great Houses of the city are also located here.

    The Commons

The Commons are the economic and social heart of the city. They make up almost half of its area, and most of its residential districts are located here.
  • Greencourt
  • Only the wealthiest merchants and officials live here. Surrounded by affluence and located next to the Tribune's palace, Greencourt is as close as you can get to the nobility without a landed title for yourself.
  • Shrineside
  • Shrineside is a peaceful neighbourhood tucked beside the City Hall and the Necropolis. It is a highly desired area to live in, as it is tucked away from the arterial roads of the city.
  • Southwall
  • Wedged between the busy Grand Market and the port of the city, Its location between two critical centers of commerce means that the city guard are never far away. Southwall sees a high amount of traffic - for good and bad.
  • Axewall
  • Axewall is the major residential district of the city, home to most of its laborers and craftsmen. It is wedged between the safety of Patrician's Ward and Jewel's Keep, but the neighbourhoods which rest in the shadow of the western wall are considered restless by some. The main boulevard of the city runs though Axewall, from the main gate to the Grand Market.

    The Waterfront

The Waterfront is the commercial lifeline of the city. Shipbuilders and fishermen also make their living here, but it is a dirty, loud and smelly environment, highly undesirable for living.
  • The Port
  • Provides work and services to the sailors which make their stop in the city. It sits in the shadow of Jewel's Keep, and it is well-trafficked by guards, who keep relative order in place.
  • The Gutter
  • The rough side of town, many of its houses are little more than glorified sheds. It is the forgotten, crime-ridden corner of Gal-Aralu, where guards have little reason to venture.

    Other

  • Squalor
  • Squalor is a tent village which came about as refugees of the Third Brukian-Hastumite war flooded the city. It sits just outside the eastern gates of the city. Home to people who are too poor, or are not allowed to settle within the city itself, but still rely on it for their livelihood.
  • The Graveyard
  • The dead of the city rest just outside of the eastern wall, on the hills just above the swamp. Recent events have seen it severely overfilled, with several mass graves dug outside its fences.
  • The Swamp
  • A saltwater swamp east of Gal-Aralu. It is an abudant source of crawfish and herbs for those brave enough to take the risk against Umberlee's beasts. It also acts as a natural barrier against sieges on the eastern walls.
  • Pilgrim's Point Lighthouse
  • Sitting high above Pilgrim's Point, the lighthouse is a major landmark on the outskirts of the city. It provides safe passage for ships entering The Jewel.
