The Federated States of the Allied Islands

The Federated States of the Allied Islands is a federal republic consisting of dozens of semi-independent states, or "Ostines", spread out over over 300 individual islands. The political structure of the islands is ancient rivalling only Xoshoyjan for longest continuous political organization. Since incorporating the Kingdom of Oskye after the The Great War it has become the unrivaled naval power in Salea and Ostinians are found on nearly every trading vessel in the world. A monopoly on cane sugar production and a large portion of the arable land for popular spices, the FSAI is also an economic superpower.

Structure

The Islands organize differently during different seasons of the year following the natural migratory cycles of the Tripletail fish. When the Tripletail gather in the summer the entire population comes together to build a massive city on Zagreus island. It covers the largest islands and the population govern themselves along popular, representative, democratic lines by holding elections based on geographic area and creating a city council with a chairperson but no separate executive. After the summer breeding season, the Tripletail flood back out to the numerous outlying islands and so do the people. During the winter cycle there are dozens or hundreds of small independent political organizations among the Islanders. Some of them are strict authoritarian bands, others just a couple of family units operating together. Some have hereditary titles and land holdings during the winter, others redistribute their traditional islands' goods amongst themselves.     It is important to note that the political organizations of the individual Ostines during the winter cycle have nothing to do with the general political organization of the nation during the summer cycle. In Ostine Zanik, for instance, the winter organizational style is a strict heriditary caste system with some members being considered 'untouchable' by higher castes and barred from participation in public life. In summer though, a Zanikian 'untouchable' has the same rights and privileges as anyone else and is treated as such by their fellow Zanikian's during the summer gathering. Once the Tripletail set off though, the Zanikian will regain their 'untouchable' status until the next breeding season. To outsiders this shift in status and privilege seems radical and confusing, to an Ostinian it seems as normal as packing away your warm furs in the summer and bringing them back out again when the leaves change color.

Culture

The culture of the FSAI is remarkably varied between individual ostines during the winters. A common throughline between them all is a connection to nature, a rejection of outside interference even in local matters, a tradition of seafaring, and an affinity towards anyone who chooses the sea as a home. The major cities of the FSAI are all port cities and welcome any and all from around the world. Most Islanders pride themselves on being multi-lingual and being slightly above 'petty' land-based squabbles.

Public Agenda

Since the The Great War, the General Council has been primarily occupied with shoring up and expanding its defensive naval power. Publicly the Head of State encourages peace and the development of other new nations born from the war like Morethalas, and Promaria but privately the General Council watches with caution the newly empowered Epron, and the newly humbled Gashain.

Assets

Since incorporating the Republic of Oskye, the Federation boasts the greatest and most advanced naval fleet in the world. The Islands geographic location also making them a natural hub of trade, and they are a major exporter of sugar, spices, and lumber.
