Promaria
Promaria is a nation in the southwest of Isera and Oromo. Humanoids have lived in the area that is now Promaria for thousands of years. The nation is divided into two landmasses, the northern portion is on the continent of Isera and occupies the delta of the Rouralt River. It is swampy and heavily forested. Some of the central delta islands have been converted into fertile rice fields. The southern portion encompasses the Bedsea Archipelago, a series of thirteen islands also heavily forested with palm and coconut trees. The two landmasses have individual governments who decide local matters, and the populations also send representatives to the national congress in the capital city of Mistbell.
Structure
Promaria is a federated parliamentary republic with two major states: Westney and Bedsea. The national congress has primacy over the state congresses, who in turn have primacy over city and village councils. Individuals vote for city, state, and national representatives in general elections every five years.
The National Congress is a unicameral representative body who passes all laws in Promaria. The only decisions not solely up to the National Congress include the annual budget and declarations of war both of which are also subject to a general vote of the population.
Culture
The culture of Promaria is an intentional combination of the cultural values of the former Gashanian Republic, Chuyqua, Epron, and the indigenous cultures of the Bedseas. In practice this translates to a strong sense of both individual liberties and communal responsibility, a strong governmental hand in economics, and a deep current of religious faith throughout society. As this new country tried to emerge from several other influences, they attempted to bring the best of their former nationalities with them while leaving behind some of the less desirable ones.
Assets
Seven forts were built by both Epronian and Chuyquan forces during the Great War, and these remain as an important part of the national defense of Promaria. After the establishment of the nation the forts were renamed after important figures in local history. Forts Phan Hữu Ðịnh, Muldaney, and Logoria were named after the three individuals who originally proposed the union of the Westney Swamp region and the Bedsea Archipelago.
History
Promaria is one of the most recent nations on Salea, it was created following the Great War under the The Treaty of Abderaliana. The northern portion of Promaria used to be controlled by Gashain and was called the "Westney Swamp" region. The Bedsea Archipelago was technically independent but held as a vassal state by Chuyqua. During the war Epronian troops conquered and held most of the northern portion of Promaria and had a great influence on the populace which distanced them from the rest of Gashain. The citizens of the area appealed to the peace concord at Abderaliana to grant them independence and after they joined with the representatives from the Bedsea Archipelago, their claim was granted and the nation of Promaria was created.
Religion
There is no official religion in Promaria but religious belief is a highly prized virtue in civic life. Worship of a deity is not a requirement for public office, but atheist and agnostic candidates in electoral contests have had an incredible loss rate even in spite of the short history of the nation. Worship of Moradin is widespread across Westney, especially in Dwarven communities, while 'wilder' deities are worshiped in the Bedsea.
Agriculture & Industry
Promaria is an agricultural and export power in the region. Westney has vast rice fields and is part of the 'breadbasket' of old Gashain. Both Westney and the Bedsea are producers of lumber. The mangroves from Westney produce a massive amount of charcoal which is exported to nearby Chuyqua as a cooking and metallurgic fuel and the palm trees in the Bedseas produce coconuts, palm wine, palm oil, and dragon's blood pigments.
Education
Situated culturally and geographically between old Gashain and Chuyqua, Promaria inherited an extensive educational system that was enshrined in the founding documents of the republic. The literacy rate is nearly 100% and there are multiple universities in major cities like Myalin, Ciregarong, Twigbell, and of course Mistbell.
Infrastructure
It is easy to traverse throughout Promaria because it is relatively small and also full of navigable waters. The longest road connects Ft. Murton to Twigbell and travels though Birdwatch and Ft. Passage. The other major road connects Birdwatch, Mistbell, and Twigbell via a series of bascule bridges. A smaller road connects Ft. Murton to Ft. Raebershire.
Most other settlements of Promaria are connected through frequent water travel. The distance between Westney and the Bedsea is under a halfday and so there are frequent services across established lines. Strangely the most complicated journey between major population centers in the country is between Mistbell and Ft. Raebershire which involves taking a land route from Mistbell to Birdwatch, and then switching to a water route down to Ft. Raebershire. Despite being the same distance: the travel time from Mistbell to Ft. Raebershire is almost twice that as between Mistbell and Ft. Muldaney.
