Seafarer

A race of ocean-dwelling humanoids that are almost as isolationist as the Snow Elves. Seafarers, otherwise known as Atlanteans due to their home nation, seek to distance themselves from those on land and live in peace. They value their religions and strength as a unified race, a notion most Atlantean warlords will speak of when attempting to rally their soldiers.   One of the more peculiar details about seafarers is their skeleton being composed of selenite. While this has resulted in the species as a while having a naturally high affinity to magic, the unpredictable nature of "uncoded" crystals has resulted in their lifespan being constantly at risk. Their crystal bones can be manipulated against them, allowing enemies to overload their bodies with magic from the inside. In some cases, they can contract an unknown disease (locally known as "Ocean Sickness") caused by whatever the crystals leak out, or even be used as a catalyst in summoning rituals. As a result, it is not uncommon to hear about seafarers washing up on a Lunarian shore during the daytime news.   The very nature of their skeletal system and existence, in comparison to other Sagrean life forms, brought their origin into question. Some even theorize that seafarers originate from a realm completely unrelated to Sagrea, and arrived on the planet through a portal created by the selenite crystals in Atlantis.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Although humanoid in shape, Atlanteans possess webbing their feet and hands. They possess fins on their forearms and head. A set of gills line their neck, although they are able to breathe air while on land as well. Selenite crystals will occasionally protrude past their skin and expose themselves. Seafarers see this extension of the skeleton as a sign of natural strength, and may use the elongated "bone" as a weapon.

Growth Rate & Stages

Seafarers begin life as an egg that hatches within 4 months. Water within five meters of the egg is known to warm up in its presence, often reaching temperatures comparable to a hot tub (using eggs for a hot tub of your own is illegal in every country except Milinea, so please don't try it). Upon hatching, the seafarer child will be raised by its parents until it reaches the age of eleven. This is because as a child, the seafarer is at the most risk of death caused by magical complications regarding their crystal skeleton. If the child survives past this time period, they will be considered strong enough to survive on their own. The seafarer will then continue to grow until they reach adulthood at age thirty.   Any skeletal protrusion will occur before the age of 41.

Ecology and Habitats

Seafarers only live in the ocean west of Lunaria. While they are capable of surviving on land, they do not wish to remain on it for long.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Atlanteans are typically carnivorous, but can survive without eating for over 70 days without experiencing any weakness. It is believed that their skeleton is the primary reason they are able to survive this long.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Seafarers are strong believers of having those with a great amount of strength and resolve lead their people. As such, if someone were to challenge and defeat their leader, the victor will automatically be given the role without question.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The oceans west of Lunaria.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Due to their skeletal system constantly putting them at risk of magic-based infection or overload, there have been reports of unidentified parasites being the cause of death for many seafarers. Strangely, these parasites never seem to infect other species and die at the same time as their host.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

Gender Ideals

Seafarers care not for gender for as long as their strength is sufficient enough to help them survive.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Euneti, Atlantic

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Seafarers prefer to stay away from other species' problems. Unfortunately, the zealots within their own civilization has made it hard to maintain anything but a hostile relationship with those on the land.
Lifespan
65 years, although most die at age 7.
