The vampire Dean Julian Valentin is a spectacle. On the first day of his Intro to Blight Magic class, Valentin began by exiting his coffin and drinking the blood of an anaconda as the students looked on. He frequently turns into a bat. These eccentricities are hardly remarked upon, as he's been teaching at Strixhaven for hundreds of years.Family
Valentin is sole caregiver for his niece, Aurora Wynterstarr. His brother abandoned Aurora after her mother, a human, was killed for “laying with a vampire”. He controls most aspects of Aurora’s life and forces her to learn alchemy and other skills he believes are more worthwhile for her to know. Despite how Aurora disagrees, he is convinced she will see his way eventually.Year 1 Involvement
Dean Valentin taught Introduction to Blight Magic to Shelley and Koss, but most of his interaction with the F Squad was outside of class. Useful information about the eldritch balm corruption, Sheldon Schell's arrest, and the magehunter cocoon in Witherbloom all came from the Dean, imparted to the Squad by his niece. During the protests to have Professors Mirsha Gahlván and Quintorius Kand removed from probation, Dean Valentin showed up at Dapplewing Manor with Curtie on his arm and a mass of Witherbloom students behind him. The students remained at the protest, but the Dean collected Shelley and brought them to the Dragonsguard grounds. There he demanded they release Shelley’s father and his employee, Sheldon Schell. His interactions with Sergeant Wilcox Stapholous suggested the two had a more intimate relationship at one point. Dean Valentin, along with Professor Gahlván, engaged the Oriq when they came to campus to reclaim the magehunter cocoon. He helped collect other staff members that were willing to act under the confines of secrecy. Among them was Kaedrin, Biblioplex employee who manages the book gardens. Since then, the Dean has occasionally been seen in her company or near where her apartment is in Lorehold Campus. Despite his successes in his own personal life, he was less appreciative of his niece’s. He interrupted Aurora’s first date with Gary, trapping Gary in a pest net and chastising Aurora. Gary later returned to Valentin’s cottage to apologize for his rudeness that night, bringing Griff with him as emotional support. Valentin brought the two of them into a cave and showed them the mage hunter, hatched from its cocoon, that he’d been keeping locked up. He explained that he doesn’t want Aurora involved in this, and that he would continue keeping her away from Gary. It didn’t seem this directly influenced Aurora’s decision to break up with Gary at the end of the year.Basics
