Backstory

The Burninghammers, although arrogant and wildly independent, many say these traits have been well earned. And while they are known to be curt and rather unfriendly to others, they are highly valued assets to the college and on the battlefield. Though rare, if a Leonin permits another non-leonin into their trust, it is a severe place of honor. But should this trust be broken, all will be razed in golden flame.
Griffin belongs to one of only a few Legacy Families at Strixhaven who have been with the school for its entire 700 year history.
Griff can be best understood through the following moments with his father, Bjorn Burninghammer:

A Morning’s Breakfast

Griff’s back paw was bouncing–the only distraction while his father was on yet another rise and shine rant. You’d swear he came here to lecture and not eat…
"The Burninghammers are an old family, Griffin, even older than Strixhaven’s 700 year existence," Bjorn ranted. "In fact, if it were not for our original patriarch, Yoden Proudhammer, there would be no such college. And because of his cunning, loyalty, and grit, his kin shall attend Strixhaven in perpetuity! Do you know what that means Griffin?" he implored, while mother poured the coffee, his 3rd cup.
"Yes, father; I remember. But please, would you pass the muffins? I’m going to be late for the bus…again."
"You will make this family proud, Griffin," his father said firmly, while slowly buttering his own muffin, ignoring the request. "This is not a choice. This is not frivolity. This is your duty. Your birthright. You are a Burninghammer, and there must always be a Burninghammer at Strixhaven. I will not allow you to chase…whatever it is you do. When you get your letter you will put away your puerile endeavors, shed this angsty veneer, and step into the role you were bred for. Do I make myself clear, Griffin?"
"Crystal," he said dryly. But before his father could say anything else, Griff stood up to leave, stole the buttered muffin from his father, and went off to the bus.
