Cascarani Crime Family
The Cascarani Crime Family is a prominent criminal syndicate operating within Tatharia Capitolina, led by the astute and calculating Don Rinaldo Cascarani. Having immigrated from the Kingdom of Aermond decades ago, Rinaldo and his family brought with them a shrewd sense of opportunity and a willingness to navigate the city's underworld with precision and discretion. Today, the Cascarani Family stands as a powerful force within the city, known for their control over gambling, underground fighting, and their unique role as mediators among rival criminal organizations.
Structure
The Cascarani Family’s wealth and influence stem primarily from their mastery of illicit entertainment. Key operations include:
High-Stakes Gambling Dens: These venues range from lavish Uptown establishments frequented by the elite to grittier dens in working-class districts like Oldside. Games include dice, cards, and other high-stakes contests.
Clandestine Fighting Pits: The Cascaranis oversee underground arenas where gladiatorial combat and animal fights draw massive crowds and generate significant betting revenue.
Intermediary Services: Leveraging their reputation for neutrality and discretion, the Cascaranis mediate disputes between rival criminal organizations, often profiting from the agreements they broker.
Marco Cascarani: Rinaldo’s eldest son, who oversees the fighting pits and ensures their continued profitability.
Lucetta Cascarani: The "Queen of Cards," Rinaldo’s daughter, who manages the high-stakes gambling dens.
Zantho "Iron Grip" Melloni: A loyal enforcer tasked with maintaining order and handling the family’s more aggressive dealings.

The Cascaranis are regarded as pragmatic and professional, balancing ruthlessness with a veneer of respectability. While their gambling and fighting operations are infamous, it is their role as intermediaries that truly sets them apart. Their reputation for fairness in negotiations, coupled with their ability to enforce agreements, makes them indispensable to the city’s criminal ecosystem.
Despite this, their operations are not without controversy. Accusations of rigging matches, exploiting workers, and manipulating outcomes in their own favor have dogged them for years. However, such claims rarely gain traction, as the family’s reach ensures that dissenting voices are silenced or discredited.
Assets
The family’s operations are spread across Tatharia Capitolina, with notable strongholds in:
Uptown: Exclusive gambling parlors cater to the city’s elite, protected by a network of bribed officials and hired enforcers.
Outside: The heart of the family’s fighting pits, these venues draw crowds of adventurers, laborers, and other thrill-seekers. Being beyond the city walls let's them exert more influence in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Little Tathar: A key area for smuggling exotic animals and other contraband used in their arenas, and for smuggling fighters in and out of the country.
History
The House Cascarani traces its roots to the Kingdom of Aermond, where they were minor aristocrats fallen on hard times. In search of better fortunes, a young Rinaldo Cascarani arrived in Tatharia Capitolina with his Uncle Maggi, a seasoned entrepreneur with connections to the city's burgeoning underworld. Under Maggi’s guidance, the family established its first gambling operation in Oldside.
When Maggi died unexpectedly from heart complications, Rinaldo took over the family’s operations. By his early thirties, he had expanded their reach across the city, transforming the Cascaranis into one of the most influential crime families in the region.
