Salaq
Salaq is the largest city on the eastern flank of the Sharan Peninsula and a regional trade hub known for a number of unique and highly-coveted products that form the cornerstone of its economy. Though small in the grand scheme of the Pāll-tanír's economy, the city is enough of a local powerhouse that the Black Fang has established its primary base of operations in Salaq.
Industry & Trade
As a coastal city, the primary industries of Salaq all center on the use of materials harvested from the sea. The product Salaq is best known for is its fish sauce, renowned as liquid gold among those who use it. Large workhouses are arrayed along the side of the wharf in Salaq so that only the freshest and highest-quality fish are used for the production of the city's most famous export. Throughout the year, the city sells barrels of the stuff to merchant ships heading up to Siq'Ar where it is particularly well-loved.
Another popular product from Salaq is called abaz. Abaz is a thin, translucent, coarse-textured material made from the shells of certain bivalves native to the shores near and around Salaq. When harvested, the shells clamp tight as a reflex. Drying the shells in the sun loosens the seal, allowing workers to pull the halves apart for scraping and cleaning. The end result of this is an irregular, shell-shaped pane that is sometimes exported in bulk but is more often cut to shape for use in handicrafts such as lampshades, lanterns, and windows.
The creation of abaz handicrafts creates a sizable amount of excess abaz in the form of cuttings that are often too small and too irregular for further use in other handicrafts. Fortunately, the shells are also able to be used to create glue, chalk, and varnish. Abaz varnish, in particular, is highly coveted because of its limited quantity and the lustrous finish that it produces. A portion of the abaz produced in Salaq is boiled for many hours in freshwater until soft, after which it is milled into a fine powder that is used largely as a cosmetic for lightening one's skin tone.
