Overthinghouse

The Overthinghouse is the lavish, pre-Glaze building where the Overthing sits. The current chairman is Brigadier Sir Harold Deepdelver, a former army officer from an old mining family.   The Overthinghouse consists of three wings, connecting the Chamber (in the northeast corner)   The building is directly connected to the Crystal Fields compound through three heavily secured breezeways. It also houses formal residences for the Chairman of the Overthing and the reigning monarch, though not all holders of those offices choose to use them.

Purpose / Function

Initially constructed between 408 and 387 Gn, the Overthinghouse was built from the ground up as a seat of government. Its design was intended to contain the entire government, and has expanded over the centuries to make space for the various ancillary departments.

Alterations

The Overthinghouse was constructed on the foundations of the summer palace of Aegilbraeth IV, which burnt to the ground in approximately 420 Gn. The base structure of the old great hall, in what became the northeast wing, was repurposed as the council hall, and has remained so ever since. The building has been extended bit by bit over the centuries, most recently with the three insulated glass breezeways connecting it to the glittering residential utopia of Crystal Fields.

Architecture

A six-storey palace built of Daemonstooth granite, the Overthinghouse is topped with an oak-framed Mansard roof. The larger halls are fitted with hammerbeam roofs.   The outer walls are topped with turrets, and towers mark all four corners and the central wing. The tower at the northwest corner, named after King Kannockx VII, stretches to 84 metres above ground and houses the historic Muster Bell commonly believed to have been used to muster the militia during the Battle of Quillion in 783 Gn. (That theory has, however, been debunked since - all the evidence suggests that the Muster Bell is in fact a significantly larger and more elaborate version cast no earlier than 300 Gn.)
