Silver

Silver is a precious metal that is a common source of wealth protection by those with the capital to purchase items of this metal. Silver has commonly been used as the primary constituent of coinage throughout Tuono's Corpse, such as in the Kupar of the Grand Duchy of Canyndor. The production of silver is generally extensive where it is found due to its value, however, it tends to be most commonly sourced in mountainous regions and those with great deposits of lead. An example is the city of Jalahar situated on the edge of the Silver Mountains, aptly named for the precious metal commonly found there. It was said during the years of 6993-6998 that the mines of Jalahar produced the equivalent of 20,000 Kupar worth of Silver.    The ores from which Silver is refined are numerous, however, amongst the most common forms are those produced of lead ores. Black ore is more valuable than white ore, yielding four times as much silver and twice as much lead. The lead ore is extracted from the mine, crushed and washed before the silver can then be extracted using the method of cupellation. The ore is heated to 900*C and subjected to a blast of air which oxidised the lead within the ore. The oxidised lead, litharge, is then absorbed by the porous materials of the hearth (bone-ash and such) allowing for a fairly pure silver bloom to be extracted. Further lead can then be added and the process repeated to attain purer silver. Such a process, carried out in smaller proportions, could be used to ascertain the quality of the ore and thus the value of a prospect, known as fire-assaying. Plates of known composition known as trial-plates were often used as a control to ensure the standard purity of metal was met.   The Silver would then be cast into ingots, which would be in various multiples of a Kulta, worth 24 Kupar and the equivalent weight of 12 pounds of Silver. From there, the ingots may be sold for use in jewellery or consumed by a Mint in the production of coinage. While some particularly productive and wealthy Goldsmiths may buy the silver directly for the production of items, it is more likely they rely on their customers providing such material.
