Horner

The Horner is one who works with the horns of animals to produce material suitable for working. The majority of Horners simply take the horns and work them until they are in the condition to be used for decorative or functional pieces. This process involves steeping the horns in water for a great deal of time in order to separate the outer shell and inner core, the shell then being flatted and worked to the desired form while the core generally being discarded. Flat sheets of horn are usually then sold by the Horner to more specialist craftsmen who will use the horn for various purposes including combs, decorative embellishments and many, many other uses. Particularly thin sheets of horn can also be made through extensive preparation to provide lantern panes and transparent covers for Hornbooks. Horn often is used for similar ends as Antler and bone, however, due to the processes required to make horn suitable for working, Horners have largely remained as a distinct profession in comparison to those work in the aforementioned materials.
