Oria

The original capital of Therris, built upon the River of Oria named for the ore that used to be found in the bed of the river. Ores from the nearby mountains when this city was first founded have since dried up, but new veins were opened deep within the mountains. Oria now sits as a jewel within the desert, an oasis to those within a sea of sand.

Government

The city of Oria, like all cities within Therrisian control, works by direct democracy. With the exception of some military actions, all new laws are voted on monthly to try and keep the lawbook fresh. Several "areas" of governance have been set up where locals elect committees to vote on their behalf. While these are relatively new, the term for them has been "grohts" which derives from "stands" or stand-in in dwarvish. These Grohts hold a lot of power, but individually they are very accountable to locals because they tend to be religious priests, ethnic leaders or other such people.

Defences

The doubled walled defences around Oria are a testament to their attitude towards war and outsiders. They prefer a defensive stance above all, and their armies rarely leave their own gates beyond patrolling. That isn't to say their soldiers are not proficient in offensive warfare though. This city, as well as the entire country, rely on having a heavily armed and well trained populace. There is not a baby over the age of five years old that can't pick up an arming sword and defend their people. This beyond all else is the driving force in Therris' military might, they have curated a population that is well trained and determined to defend their people from a young age.

Industry & Trade

Oria itself has a large mining operation that takes place in the mountains to the north, as well as many quarries nearby that use the sandstone for local works. Being planted directly on the mouth of a river means that there are a plethora of farming communities outside that help supply the locals with food, many of which are made into the local famous dish, Oria Curry.

Infrastructure

The majority of the buildings in Oria are built from the sandstone that naturally occurs in the area. Much of the city is split through time, each quarter expanding from the center being slightly newer than the original quarters. The center of the city is generally where the houses of governance and voting are held. As well as essential services like postal, hospitals, food centers and military barracks. Expanding outward the city becomes much more culturally ambiguous and hotspots of several ancestries can be seen throughout the city celebrating the diversity of the ancestries. Each district is built in such a way that water and food delivery can be made to each sector, and each sector is set up by the locals to ensure that all the services that should be provided are provided by those within. Each district is expected to have an ability to take on a defensive turtle stance and survive on it's own should other districts be breached. While the outer city does boast a robust defensive system of double thick outer walls, each individual district relies on the tightly packed city streets to keep invaders at bay. The cities retrofit style of architecture does mean that several areas still use chamber pots, and lack plumbing and many other relatively new inventions that the city has taken from Galvakan immigrants.

Assets

Oria is a fully fledged city with multiple districts which all have whats needed for the local inhabitants to survive. The most prominent district would be the capital district which includes most of the government buildings, and essential services. The primary resource from this area comes from the extremely rich ore mines within the mountains, as well as the fertile river soil that the city was built on initially. They have an extremely diverse cuisine centred around the legumes that are grown locally. A dish called "Oria Curry" is popular in the area which consists of Lentils, coconut red curry sauce, and yellow peppers.

History

The original founders of Oria claim to have hailed from a long line that descended from the original primordial people. Why those people decided to go into a desert and found an oasis is ultimately unknown, but many believe it spurred from a disagreement between those who later founded Vive and the people of Therris were cast out.

Architecture

Tall Sandstone walls, with sleek aqueducts to carry water to and from the center city to the surrounding areas. The roads are cobbled with local stones from the mountain north, as well as the buildings are made from a bleached stone to help keep heat saturation to a minimum. Most locals prefer to live in small homes that house their entire families. It isn't uncommon for several families to build close together and many of the locals to have small tight-knit communities that they stay within.   Most homes are open year round, but do have windowed shutters to keep sand out when a sandstorm may arise. Otherwise the only difference in architecture can be seen as you move deeper into the center city, as the architecture is indicative of the time it was erected in.
