Guild of Delvers

The Guild of Delvers are the group responsible for the exploration, study, and collection of rare resources from the different layers of the underground. Being a Delver is considered one of the most important but most deadly jobs for a citizen of Elysium. However, they are also the most highly respected of all the occupations within the city. It is said that Delvers were the first to discovered the Drinking Trees in the Forest of the Lost.

Structure

Delvers are organized into numbered ranks based on what layer of the underground they have been to and survived. In order to be considered a member of a higher rank, the delver must spend at least 3 days on a layer of the underground lower than the rank of the delver and come back alive.

So for example, the lowest layer a Rank 2 Delver has been to is the Forest of the Lost. In order for that Delver to be a Rank 3 Delver, they must go to and survive for 3 days in The Great Maze and then return to the city. Only then would they be recognized as a Rank 3.

The Delvers who have been to the lowest parts of the known underground are called Abyss Explorers. They are considered the highest rank you can be within the Delvers.

Culture

Delvers generally have a survival of the fittest mentality due to their jobs. While each member is of course their own individual, those who are higher rank tend to become more and more distant from both the citizens of the city and from their own guild. The lower levels of the underground take a massive mental toll on those of high ranks, and it can manifest in many different ways.    The citizens of Elysium however see the high ranks delvers and Abyss Explorers effectively as heroes and celebrities. Families will jockey to have their children trained by the families of Abyss Explorers for example.

Public Agenda

In general, the goals of the Delvers are simple:
  1. Explore and understand the different layers of the underground 2. Study and research the creatures and plants that can be found 3. Find and bring back resources for the betterment of the city

Assets

Delvers are funded by the general taxes from wages and sales of goods in the city, as well as any coin they earn from extra jobs they may take on. Delvers are exempt from goods and wages taxes that affect normal citizens in honor of having the most dangerous job in the city. Delvers also do not have to buy their own living spaces, but they are certainly allowed to do so. Additionally, Delvers who do own property sometimes open their houses for other delver as a source of additional income while they are away on missions. These locations are typically called "stayhomes".
