Engineer
Know all about everything technical.
Introduction
A ship's engineer is the member of a ship's crew. They are the officer that is repsonsible for all the mechanical systems. They oversee the functioning of engines, machinery, and all technical aspects that keep the ship moving and operational.
What do they do.
There jobs include things like performing maintenance, inspecting, diagnosing and solving problems, purchasing necesary spare parts on time. As well as managing the oils onboard, such as fuel, lubrication and hydraulic oil. They have to make sure that all equipment is in well functioning order at all times.
Different Engineers
Often there are only one to three engineers onboard a ship, depending on the size, so they cannot be specialized in one type of equipment. They have to know it all, and work with limited part availability to get the ship to the next port.
The engineers can be ranked in the same way as the deck officers. Chief, Second, Third. And on bigger ships with less automation you might find a Fourth. On specialised ships there might be specialised engineers, for example a ship that sails with frozen cargo might have an engineer to take care of the refrigaration equipment. And ship's with electric propulsion systems might have an electronic engineer to aid the engine room team with specialized knowledge.
This is my favourite job/rank, mainly because it was what my uncle did in the navy for many years.
