Toshi Ryoko
Toshi (17) is the oldest of five children living in the Ryoko farmhouse, just outside of Olkedo. Grandpa Noboru Ryoko doesn’t mourn the loss of his wife Kyoko Ryoko, as he’s sure she isn’t dead. “She’s gone on to the other place. I’ll see her again, soon.” She left him and their daughter Haruki Ryoko on a moonless night over thirty years ago. When Toshi was eleven, shortly after his youngest sister Oki was born, their mother vanished as well, leaving them all without explanation or warning. Randal Ryoko Sr. was heartbroken and soon left in search of his missing wife. Six years later, no one has heard from either. Noboru just smiles and chuckles, as if he’s part of a secret joke.
Toshi’s siblings include his burly brother Randal Ryoko Jr. (14), his sickly brother Katsu Ryoko (11), and his two sisters Usagi Ryoko (13) and Oki Ryoko (7). The former he has a tight bond with, but the youngest child is wicked and sometimes scares him.
When he isn’t tending the farm or watching his siblings, Toshi usually has his nose in a book or inches away from the soil, watching the ants and beetles. Their quiet cooperation fascinates him and he wishes he could speak with them to find out what happened to his parents and grandmother. He’s been all over the town’s library and has even found his way upstairs into the storage where the ancient texts and tomes have lain for ages unknown.
