Kolm'zuul Material in Project Chaos | World Anvil

Kolm'zuul

You realize what you're asking for is the hardest metal to obtain in the Realm, right? You realize how hard it is just to get one kal'ir of it? And you want me to make this book a pedestal entirely out of it? Oh wait, you mean...this is the sacred grimoire of your family. This book is...Fa'iisa's Grimoire of Saleos. Why didn't you say so sooner? Yes, something sacred deserves to be shown upon a sacred metal. I can think of no better honor for Fa'iisa or your family than a pedestal made of Kolm'zuul.
—A metalsmith talking to Amanda Saleos

In The Myths of Creation, when the 7 Primordial Ancients and Evii'iliz built the world of Infernus, they shaped its innermost layers with a metal that never deteriorates and is almost indestructible: kolm'zuul.   When discovered that kolm'zuul was appearing from the ground of Infernus (and much of it was), the Ancients decided to use it in architecture. The metal, the Ancients found, was nigh indestructible, and when worked with correctly, it was metal so beautiful that Evii'iliz herself crafted the first jewelry out of it.   During Ancient rule, Kolm'zuul was abundant, so much so that the 7 Primordial Ancients had palaces built almost entirely out of it. The most famous wonder and one of 3 wonders that remain from the Ancient Era, the Colossus of Zan'nal'takriin was made of the metal and still stands at present. When presented to Zan'nal'takriin, he was in admiration and gave the Colossus his blessing. It was then that Ancients deemed the metal as sacred.   From then on, kolm'zuul was not only used in architecture but also jewelry. When it came to light that even Evii'iliz worked with the metal and that she had made a beautiful piece of craft with it, the sacred metal became a trend among the common populace. Every piece of jewelry made was always sent to Zan'nal'takriin for his blessings.   At some point, assumed before the Ancient 7th Line, the metal had also begun to be used in weaponry; the Blade of Av'taran'zal was the first weapon ever to be made of it.   Unfortunately, by the time of the end of Ancient Rule, the available amount of kolm'zuul had begun to diminish, and the value of the metal started to increase. It wasn't only in value that the metal rose, but also in its status of a sacred metal. This trend would follow into the Elder Era, where the metal was used much more sparingly.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Kolm'zuul when in its natural state is a dark grey ore. After being processed, removed of impurities, and finally refined the metal takes on a completely different appearance. For a reason that still confuses modern-day chemists, kolm'zuul changes color to a shiny light orange.   When extremely compressed, either naturally or in a lab, the metal can become paper-thin and translucent. In this form, the metal can be delicately sculpted, either to become gem-like or into a ka'lir.
