Ockmery

The town of Ockmery was founded more than five centuries ago, about three hundred years after fisherman Calf led a group of humans to search a new home for them in the waters of the Krisna and discovered the Calacle Island. It was not the first settlement that was established on the island, conceding it to a long-abandoned camp established by Calf himself, but it is the biggest one as of now and, if that can be said, capital of the Republic.   The main reason for Ockmery's importance and why it was founded at that very spot is its harbour. Most of the shores of Calacle are quite rocky. While a shallow boat or a raft could manoeuvre between the rocks, those boats are vulnerable to turning over in the rapid flow of the Krisna. Because of that, local fishers had to invent a new, more stable kind of vessels which required a safe place to sail from. After finding such a place, they built a settlement and called it Ockmery.   Even more important it became once brave people started to go trading with the human countries on the riversides of the Krisna, which required big, durable boats to do so. Some of them would even go to other human countries and organise the trade on their shores which most people were afraid of, earning a fortune in a few years and returning home with many valuable things produced by the mainland civilisation that calaclians lacked. Some of them were drowning, of course, but it was mostly happening on their way from and to the island, not during the trade itself.   The town really flourished a little bit over a hundred years ago, when the Human Empire conquered the Great Plains on the other side of Krisna. The empire could barely transport the military supply across the river, let alone establishing regular trade routes. When it collapsed, the fishers of Calacle, sailing from Ockmery, were the ones to provide both sides with ways to transport things across the river.   It was a tough and perilous job, with many sailors forever remaining in the waters along with the goods, so the prices were very high. Still, the sailors of Ockmery began to trade actively on both sides of Krisna and between them. Sometimes, a crew would be employed by local traders or nobles for their knowledge and experience. In the hundred years to pass, the gold from those activities has turned a small fishing hamlet into a flourishing town.
