H' BchBrche, the Black Isles trolls (h! ᵝʘxeᵝʘʁexə)
Calling themselves h' BchBrche, the trolls of the Black Isles have for centuries been absent from the global stage. Only incursions by Ptarshakkian soldiers into lands considered sacred to the BchBrche triggered their return and would begin decades of conflict between the two powers of the region.
Like all trolls, the h' BchBrche are a highly stratified caste-based society. Their are ten castes in total (from highest rank to lowest): the highest tiers are the fertile castes, 1. Queen regnant, 2. royal family, 3. princes. The remaining castes are all infertile and/or forbidden to breed. They are the governing castes: 4. warrior castes, 5. priest caste; the worker castes: 6. the artisan caste, 7. the builder caste, 8. the magi caste; and the lowest ranked castes: 9. the slave caste, and the 10. drone caste. The vast majority of the populace within BchBrchen cities are female. Males are finite, divided between the court males who are firmly controlled by the royal court (most of which are concubines of the queen) and the hundreds of drones who are expelled from their communities after being passed over by the queen. (It is these drone exiles that embodied most of the other tribes of Gruthe encountered and conceptualized as what constitutes a troll per se.)
Naming Traditions
Feminine names
Women and girls among the trolls tend to have multisyllabic names that are combinations of the particles below (with some additional variants). Most Feminine names begin with the "troll B" which is rendered /ᵝʘ/ and indicates the next consonant is followed by /e/. Very few formal feminine names do not contain one /ᵝʘ ... e/ syllable. Higher ranking female trolls may acquire additional /ᵝ! ... e/ syllables speaking to their glory, titles, honours. Masculine names
Male BchBrchen names are preceeded by caste markers: Royal-fertile caste:
Prince: wa- /wɑ/ • Duke: dhwa- /dʰwɑ/ • Governing castes:
Warrior: thra- /θʁɑ/ • Priest: kthan- /kʰθɑn/ • Worker castes:
Artisan: sint- /sint/ • Builder: kBr- /kᵝ!eʁ/ • Magi: khaj- /kʰɑʤ/ • Drone and Slave castes:
dhe- /dʰə-/ • dhre- /dʰʁə-/ • Drones rarely have proper names. They are often referred to by their position, tasks, or appearance, or actions. Some are even merely referred to as "drone," rendered dhektier /dʰəktjər/.
Unisex names
The BchBrchen tongue is highly gendered. There exist no gender neutrals. In instances when there might be an agender or gender-neutral term, the feminine gender is used.
Family names
The BchBrchen people do not have surnames per se, but merely band and clan association, but these are rarely used and exclusively by royals. Drones born to any ranking female, are inherently devoid of clan, tribe, or band.
Other names
The Black Islanders often have elaborate titles and appellations that speak to the glory and great achievements they have made. Drones are forbidden such titles, and must use only one name.
