Erel (eh-rehl)
The Erel are one of the 4 races making up The Amix , and as such they have an inbuilt distrust to hatred for Animalians. This relationship originated from intense jealousy over The Animalian King's clear favouritism for Humans , for they were given thoughts - were the first Mind. Such feelings bubbled and boiled for a very long time as events around the humans creation only rubbed salt in the wounds, again and again after the instigation of The Ae's War. Eventually, the fish created their own Mind... the Erel.
Erel are essentially humanoid fish, taking features from all sorts in a variety akin to humans; everything from having different coloured skin to different shaped hands. For example, some Erel have tougher elaborately colourful frilled tails and tall head fins, others have tough rubbery shark tails. Some have more fins and frills, others less. They range drastically in colour and patterning in the same way fish do.
By form the Erel are adept at life in the water, and they either band together among their kind like schools of fish or prefer to work entirely alone like the hunting shark; it takes much to get them to work with other races entirely. Currently they have anchored themselves to the city Lashell, adapted for water living while still efficiently bringing in the coin to show off. Here they can feel safe knowing their own are not far away, allowing many to stray just so in order to explore and better the city one step at a time.
Of all the Amix races, the Erel embody the suspicion and quick reflexes of their ancestors. For they felt the most unjustly targeted on the food chain, many Erel will often prefer their own kind and show distrust for others. This makes them the second most driven to acting against the Animalian as their instincts dictate, bested only be the fierce Drak. Erel can be calm but never believe they trust you until they have said it themselves, until then they can be just as snappy as a Drak, but their anger comes in less fire and more ice.
Appearance
- A fish that mutated into a humanoid form, not specifically a trout or a shark but all that is 'fish.' Because of this, they seem to take on traits from multiple branches of fish: Triangular heads cut straight through the water, leading the way for an elongated body streamline in design.
- Legs are thin and needle like, sturdy enough for traversing land but more ideal for tucking against their tail and out of the way while swimming.
- Similarly their arms and hands are fin like and best for swimming but can be split into digits for manipulation when needed.
- Most Erel will have a long strong tail of some sort although its appearance can vary greatly, from the sturdy shark to the frilly beta fish.
- The same could be said for the number and shape of dorsal fins however most have at least one large one along the head in place of hair, which they very much tend to style as if it were.
- Fin shaped ears allow for hearing above water but otherwise their sensitive noses are best used
- Their dark sclera eyes are able to adapt to both land and sea.
- Erel will also have gills somewhere for use when under water, their placement ranges along the torso to jaw which can influence the clothing freedom an individual has greatly.
- In fact those Erel that live exclusively in the water or actively switch between water and land tend to go light or absent on clothing altogether.
Height & Weight: Erel typically average 6'6 feet / 2 meters tall. Extremely slender in form, even so they are very dense, with their weight increasing about 50% in relation to their height compared to humans.
Features
Aquatic
Erel are not of water or representatives of the water cycle, no, they were made to live in the water. Of all the races, Erel are best adept for life under water. They swim far faster than they can walk or run on land and can manoeuvre as easily, if not more so, when under the surface.
Thanks to their gills they can breath water as easily as air. Combined with their dense build, they feel little of the cold and high pressure of the deeper sea living. Their sensitive noses can detect subtle changes in water currents giving them a better sense of what is around them and finally, (as if they even need it) their eyes see just as clearly under water as they do so on land and can see a fair distance in the dark.
A Taste for Blood
As they formed from malice and hate for Animalians, Erel of course took their weaponry traits from the most well known hunters of the sea, the sharks. Most Erel have viscous rows of razor sharp teeth they will not hesitate to snap, latch on and gnash.
Then of course, now the scent of blood is in the water. They can smell blood in water from far away and can track it down to its exact source. If that weren't bad enough, a sort of primal savagery takes over when they have the scent in their nose and they attack with a burst of viciousness against their prey.
Naming Traditions
Family names
Erel names are strength, either in coming from strong breathes or in flashing the teeth as much as possible.
Examples: Ulysses, Semore, Trikin or Skarp
Family names then either soften the blow: Clens, Iner
Or follow up with a lighter jab: Juk, Kase
Culture
Major language groups and dialects
A majority will know Erellish even when in mixed communities as it is simply easier for their mouths to speak, however, they are obliging in learning to speak and write Penn. Erellish is also written, although less so, it uses Boric lettering and when spoken is a combination of teeth grinding, gnashing and breathy sucking sounds.
