Session 0, Confined to Waves of Woe, Part 1A, Report
General Summary
A group of strangers book passage across the north wonder sea, on a small vessel called the Old Olga. On their way southward the boat suddenly comes to a stop, as the engine starts coughing and smoking. A thick fog creeps in, surrounding them and obscuring their vision.
A traumatised and intensely seasick hill dwarf from the Greymanic Kingdoms by the name of Dankil, assaults the poor drunk captain with his vomit, as the nudist wood-elven druid Edwald lies spread out in his full glory across the deck, enjoying the faint slimmer of sunlight breaching the thick cloud cover.
Below deck, in the crew quarters a charlatan bard, by the name of Levi tries to unlock the captains lodge. Seeking somesort of recompense for his filthy surroundings. Failing, he instead disguises himself as the captain and manages to convince a half sleeping deckhand to force the door open (saying that he could't find his key). In the captains chambers, he finds an UV-flashlight and a couple of strange coins made of wood, carved with the symbol of Ouroboros. (Later they find out, that these coins represent the criminal organisation known as the Styx, a mysterious and powerful group hidden in the shadows of the eastern reaches of Zenith). Watching this theatre play out, seemingly concentrated in her meditation, Azura the young fire-novice sorcerer keeps to her self, considering her position. As the ship comes to a halt, these 4 individuals discover that the boat was sabotaged by a fifth passanger. Who confides to them, that the waters around them is the hunting grounds for heathen vikings. One such clan leader, a man by the name of Steel Jaw, has a bounty on his head. The nameless passanger wants them to be found, hoping to get a chance at killing this beast of a man.
...and they wouldn't have to wait long. Their small boat is torn in half by a large galley piercing the veil of fog. It's covered in some sort of dark organic material, almost like skin, and off its railing marauders attack them.
The battle plays out and the group crawles atop the enemy ship, as their small boat disappears beneath the waves. Here they and the bounty hunter faces the captain. A large hulking beast. His left arm made of metal and the same strange black matter pulsing in his veins and across his scarred chest. An enormous two-handed axe, is slung across his shoulder, wielded with one arm.
In a quick battle he chops the bounty hunter in two with his axe, as the group of 4 adventures are busy with his crew. Overwhelmed, but strong of will, they try to stand their ground but are before too long overpowered. Two of them flung from the ship and into the sea, Dankil and Edwald, and the remaining captured and taken, Levi and Azura. Dankil and Edwald find themselves stranded on a small island, The Mintrail Isle, facing a small and ruined church covered in beautiful pink flowers across its weathered stone. Further up the shore they spot a collapsed colony, half covered in the fangs of natures waves. Thick dark green moss and black stone. They see the sails of familiar ship docked and a faint flicker of activity amidst the destroyed mass of buildings.
Here in the church they find a new ally, a halfling priest of the church of the empress Elision, Viktorn. With an almost supernatural sense of smell Dankil and Edwald manages to uncover what seems to be a tunnel covered in a black fungus like moss, underneath the church. ''Terror and fear, something sleeps beneath the colony...'' says Viktorn hunted as if possessed by living nightmares. As they are about to descend, they hear a scream from outside. In the belly of an open grave they find the half broken and beaten visage of Levi. Levi had somehow against all odds managed to escape his captives. Bound to an old pipe in the cellar of a ruined hotel in the colony of mintrail isle, he had by the sacrifice of a fellow captive by the name of Genry, managed to free himself. As the horde of heathens were occupied with their sacrificial rites, he slipped through cracks and locked doors out into the open. Spotting a church on the outreaches of the colony, he hightailed to its grounds. As he explored the hotel he found himself in the chambers of Steel Jaw, here he found a letter, that seemed to indicate that somebody had captured Steel Jaws wife and where using her to control who he attacked and raided. Somebody most likely very rich and powerful in the east.
Sadly before Levi awoke in the dungeon, Azura had already been taken further away, potentially alive, but somewhere else. Reunited the group descended into the depth of the tunnel network. Following the curious nose of Dunkil they discovered a lair of hibernating insect-like beasts that sparked a deep terror in their souls. As they tried to escape, they felt they were now being watched, as a voice range through their minds, ''Sleep... Lay down and sleep, we will help you..''.
Backing up through another tunnel, they found themselves in a cellar of sorts, where the dark material of the tunnels merged with the underground of the colony. In this cellar they saw a power-generator, that they desperately tried to get going, while something approached in the dark.
Springing out of the depth of a shadow a large creature, with bone-like skin, large claws and teeth attacked them, a Meenlock. Fighting it off, another one appeared almost killing their halfling friend, just as Edwald got the generator going. A lightbulb above them flickered on and basked their surroundings in a thick bright light that seemed to scare the creatures. With this advantage they fought them off, seeing many more of them in the deep dark reaches of the tunnel they came from, waiting for the light to die out. The group hurried on, as Viktorn guided them into the storage of an old general shop. They barricaded the back and front of the shop and finally found rest. Viktorn talked of a way off the island, an old smugglers network connected to the building. At the end they would find a boat, that just might reach land.
Before heading out, they explored the small shop for supplies that might aid them. But they only found the scene of a suicide. The shop keeper laying in a pool of his own blood in the bathtub upstairs, across the wall written in dark red ink; ''10111127-4''.
With this last mystery to chew on, among their nightmarish experience doing the last 24 hours, they found restless sleep. They awoke in the midst of night and crawled through the narrow space of the smugglers tunnel and found the boat. With the cover of darkness aiding them they stealthily escaped the island... A strange nightmare blinked them into another existence, a supernatural occurrence that placed them on a horrific shore of an unknown land, forgotten by the annals of cosmic history. Here they found a monolith, a large stone dwarfing the surrounding landscape of dense viscous and mud. At the foot of the stone facade, a skeleton. Its hand resting against harsh timeless material, revealing a message written in plain common. ''They have abandoned us...''
They awoke simultaneously on a much more pleasent shore, the boat pushing against the dark sand. In the distant a village, lively and welcoming. They had reached Fratania.
