Citrine Settlement in Pallo | World Anvil

Citrine

Government

The town has a local magistrate. It is large enough to warrant having a small governing body headed by a mayor, but the people prefer the simplicity of the small local government.

Defences

Sentry Towers

There is a sentry tower towards the center of town, along the border between it and The Great Espirian Mountains, and three more towers placed between Citrine and Fort Jade, Agate and Moonstone, and Emerald. The flames atop these towers are kept burning at all times. If the flame is out for more than one hour, it is a sign that the town has been lost. In the tower different metals are kept to throw into the fires in case magic fails. The changeing of the color of the fire is used to signal different things:
  • Blue fire = enemy attack
  • Green fire = monster attack/creature stampede
  • Red fire = large fire
  • White fire = disease outbreak
  • Purple fire = severe weather/natural event

Soldiers

Being in close proximity to the mountains, there is a small encampment of Mountain Goats. It is one of a few outposts where they can get some down time after being in the mountains for weeks. There is also a small detachment of soldiers from Fort Jade present.

Industry & Trade

The main industry is farming. Bordering the town from the west to the north is a lot of farm land. It spans from the river over to the lake. Because of the abundant production, about 70% of the food produced is sent down the river to Emerald and dispersed through the republic.

Infrastructure

There are two bridges that span the river on the eastern border of the town. The river current affords the use of a large watermill. The town does have sewers that run out to sea instead of the river. There are five plazas and 3 boulevards for beautification and events.

Districts

There are two districts in Citrine: Health and Happiness. The Happiness district is the south western third of the town. It is home to the magistrate's office, the circus, a park, a theater, a boulevard, and three of the plazas. The Health district is the remainder of the town, where the businesses and homes of 90% of the population are. The two boulevards, flank the remaining two plazas and act as the main roads through the town.

History

As people were looking to settle in other locations after the founding of Emerald, most branched out along the coast line. It made trade, navigation, and survival easier. A few headed in towards the mountains. They found that between the mountains to the south, the thick forest to the east, and the lake to the west, it was located in a very safe position: especially with the added protection of other towns and cities north of them. It was called the safest town on Espiria for a while before Madrane started a war with Samaria. While the mountains still provide natural protection, and have been occupied by The Mountain Goats, even during the armistice, Citrine is the closest town to Madrane.

Points of interest

Willa Warms' Whimsical Circus

Willa's circus has a permanent placement here. While the acrobats, dancers, and other mobile performers travel with the travelling act, there is a lot of business that comes to the permanent installation. Willa has an eclectic collection of exotic animals, a fun house, a magic maze of mysticism, and even the now closed deadliest garden on Pallo.

Sunstone Manor

This expansive mansion on the south side of the town is the country home of The Sunstone Party. Behind it is a gorgeous view of the Espirian Mountains. The mansion has housing for 20 people, including an in house chef, two house servants, a groundskeeper, and a gardener. The current owners of the estate have permitted guests to walk the eastern garden and use the gazebo on the north side of the property.

First Merchant's House

The headquarters of the Merchant's Guild. The headquarters was moved to Citrine from Emerald to save money and allow the Second Merchant's House in Emerald to use more of its space for handling the tens of thousands of merchant certifications and licenses for Emerald alone. As such, the First Merchant's House is small, with half of the space used for certification and licensing and the other half reserved for meetings of the Merchant Guild Chapter heads, meetings with politicians, and meetings with foreign dignitaries and trade representatives.

Tourism

The circus and Sunstone Manor are both popular tourist attractions. The circus attracts huge crowds frequently, especially families. The Manor is a great vacation spot for those seeking a relaxing or romantic scene.

Architecture

The houses are all, the lone exception being Sunstone Manor, made out of wood. Being home to the circus, many people have been inspired to pain their home more vibrant colors. This makes Citrine a more visually striking city even at a distance as the vast array of colorful houses add to the joyful mood of the town.

Geography

The land around and north of the town is very flat. Between the town and the mountains there are some gentle rolling hills, but still mostly flat land.

Natural Resources

The Great Espirian Mountains are full of valuable materials, but they are largely left there due to the dangerous landscape and ongoing armed conflict. The land is very fertile and makes farming many different foods easy. The river is also deep and fast. While there isn't much to fish from the river, it is clean, fresh water and rich in minerals from the mountains. A few prospectors have tried panning for precious metals, but the current makes it difficult.
