Lasau

Lasau is a bustling metropolis located towards the center of Leryia, on the eastern shore of Belirin Lake . The city is situated between the forks of the Otterdwell River , with the Siripini Jungle  to the southeast and two small farming communities, Riverdeep  and Redbarrow , to the northwest and southwest, respectively. As the capital of the continent, Lasau is a thriving center of trade, commerce, and culture.   The demographics of Lasau are diverse, with a mix of humans, elves, dwarves, halflings, and other races living side by side. The city is a melting pot of cultures, with people from all walks of life coming together to trade, work, and socialize.   The people of Lasau engage in a wide variety of occupations. The city is a major center for trade, with merchants from all over the continent coming to buy and sell goods. There are also many skilled artisans and craftsmen in Lasau, producing a variety of goods, from jewelry and clothing to weapons and armor. The city is also home to a large number of scholars and intellectuals, who study a wide range of subjects, from history and philosophy to magic and alchemy.

Government

Lasau's government is a complex system that reflects the city's diverse population and rich history. It is a merchant oligarchy, where a powerful group of wealthy merchants and nobles control the city's affairs. This oligarchy is further divided into several powerful families, each vying for influence and control.   To maintain order and stability, the oligarchy has established a city council composed of representatives from the various families. The council oversees the city's laws, finances, and defense. However, the true power lies with the heads of the powerful families, who often manipulate the council to their own ends.

History

The city of Lasau stands on the ruins of the ancient city of Belerin, a small settlement once devoted to serving the Dragons and Great Cats. Belerin's history was tragically cut short during the Chain Breaker War, a conflict that lasted for five hundred years.   The Velorians, a powerful force seeking to break the dragons' dominance, launched a surprise attack on Belerin. The city's inhabitants, unprepared and unable to mount a significant resistance, were quickly overwhelmed. Many were taken prisoner and offered the chance for freedom from their servitude to the dragons and great cats. Those who refused were executed, while those who accepted were imprisoned in the catacombs beneath the city.   The catacombs, once a network of hidden tunnels and chambers, became a vast prison system, housing thousands of captives. Most of these prisoners would never see the light of day again, their lives consumed by despair and suffering. The conditions in the catacombs were harsh, with little food, water, or sanitation. Disease ran rampant, and many prisoners perished from starvation, illness, or torture.   The Velorians used Belerin as a strategic foothold on the continent of Leryia, launching attacks on nearby settlements and cities. The city's symbolic value as a former stronghold of the dragons and great cats made it a rallying point for the Velorian forces. Over the course of the war, the city was rebuilt and expanded, with the old buildings torn down or remodeled to suit the needs of the Velorian conquerors.
