The Republican Navy

The Navy of the Republic was a branch of military service formed by the The Terran Republic in the early 26th century

Origins

When the Terran Republic was founded, it had no formal military beyond the various militia forces that already existed on its member worlds. The Sickles government had to form the military from the ground up, initially placing its HQ on Nova Terra and negotiating with the General Assembly to get funding to construct ships
The Republic Navy had to deal with considerable opposition from pacifist political parties within the assembly who opposed military spending, especially when it was such a large proportion of the overall budget. The Navy also suffered due to the outbreak of war on Nova Terra, with its HQ overrun and then funding diverted to the Republic Marine Corps, which was seen as the principal branch of service.

Formation

The Republic Navy was founded in 2500 but did not receive its first dedicated fighting ships until 2503 with the construction of its first frigates out of the shipyard on New Berlin .
The Republic Navy is officially a part of the Republic Military. It's lead by the Navy Chief of Staff who answers to the Republic Military Chief of Staff. They in turn answer to the Secretary of Defence.
Admrial Melina de La Hoya was both Navy Chief of Staff and overall Chief of Staff until she retired in 2520.

Training

To join the Republic Navy, trainees have to have been a citizen of the Republic for at least four years and be subject to a background check. They must either have a clean criminal record check or receive a full clearance from the senior law enforcement official of their home-world.
All trainees are required to attend Navy Basic Training at Fort Daniels on New Berlin. This is a six week course that tests technical aptitude, ability to listen to and follow orders, personal discipline and character and fitness.
Around 20% of all trainees drop out before completing the course. Those that complete this course then enter Enlisted training.
Those trainees entering under the Officer Training Track (OCTT) undergo the same training course but all their fellow trainees are also officer candidates.

Officer Training

Prospective officers must fulfill the below conditions:

• Be aged between 18 and 35 at the time of entering training
• Possess a recognized degree
• Or have been promoted from the ranks at the minimum rank of Petty Officer 1st Class

Officer trainees undergo a one year training course where they learn, at least to a basic standard, all the relevant department skills of a modern warship. In the second half of the training, they will undertake specialist training relevant to the later career.
In addition to this training, all officer trainees are expected to conduct themselves with courtesy, honor and integrity and are held to a very high standard. "behavior unbecoming" can result in a trainee being held back or even dismissed from training, even with high aptitude scores
After completing officer training, candidates are granted the rank of Ensign and are either assigned to a base-assignment, a ship or to specialist training.
The salary of an ensign in the Republic Navy as of 2520 is A$27,000.

Enlisted Training

Enlisted crew are not held to the same high standard as officers. The Republic Navy is quite willing to take on prospective crew that will be trained in the field.
Enlisted trainees undertake a sixteen week basic training that will prepare them to serve on a ship or base. After completing this training (around 10% of prospective trainees wash out) they will be assigned to their Specialist Training which is usually designated before they begin training but can be altered if they prove to be more suitable for a different role.
The length and complexity of specialist training varies. Deck-Crew undertake a fourteen week training course at Fort Baker on Earth whilst Engineering trainees undertake thirty weeks of training, split between Fort McDaniel on Earth and Fort Watson on New Berlin.
Once an enlisted trainee has completed their basic training they are granted the rank of Rating-1 (R1). Once they have completed specialist training, they will usually be promoted to Rating-2 (R2) but some specialist training fields will see them promoted quickly to Rating-3 (R3) or Specialist-3 (S3).
The salary of an R1 in the Republic Navy as of 2520 is A$20,000.

Ships

The Republic Navy has the official mission to "protect the citizens, worlds and shipping of the Republic". In the guidance written by Admiral de La Hoya during her time as Chief of Staff, she stated that the Republic Navy should

"always expect to be outnumbered, outgunned but never outfought or out-thought. The Republic cannot likely afford to fight an attritional war nor be outright defeated. Therefore the Republic Navy must be a rapier force, efficient, lean and able to move quickly to protect its member worlds and citizens"

The Republic Navy (as of 2530) consists of the following ship types:

• Tiger-Shark class frigates - the Tiger-Shark is a fast and easily produced frigate model that is designated as a long range patrol frigate used for picket duty, as well as reconnaissance and escort duty as part of a major fleet deployment. A Tiger-Shark frigate has a crew of 155
• Razor-Shark class frigates - the Razor-Shark is a partially automated frigate. Fast, agile and able to go dark far quicker and far more efficiently than many other ships of its class thanks to the high levels of automation int he ship. A Razor-Shark frigate has a crew of 75
• Snow-Leopard class light-cruiser - a new ship class, the Light Cruiser was designed to be a quick, hard hitting ship that could take on and destroy frigates and then evade or outrun standard cruisers. Whilst it does not pack the same heavy firepower as a cruiser, the Snow-Leopard packs very modern technology and is based on Hressan technology. A Snow-Leopard has a crew of 370
• Dhaka Class cruiser - the Dhaka class cruiser is a heavily armed and well shielded warship designed to supply a high level of firepower, including a GCS-10 spinal mounted Meson cannon which can deliver fire at extreme range. A Dhaka class cruiser has a crew of 550
• Ares Class cruiser - XXXX
• Unity Class escort carrier - the Unity class escort carrier has a profile similar in size to a cruiser but carries drones rather than relying on its own weapons. A Unity class carrier can deploy 420 combat drones. It also has an excellent command and control suite and solid EW strength. A Unity class carrier has a crew of 775
• Nimitz Class escort carrier - XXXX
• Horizon Class battleship - XXXX
• Terra Class battleship - XXXX
• Republic Class super carrier - the Republic class super carrier has a profile larger than a battleship and is capable of launching a massive number of combat drones, over 975 in a single strike. It has a state of the art command and control suite and excellent EW strength. A super-carrier has a crew compliment of 2,100. The Republic, once finished, is expected to serve as Fleet flagship

Deployments

Operation White Typhoon The Republic Navy deployed Task Force White to Operation White Typhoon in 2515 as part of the war against Burning Path on Nova Terra. The carrier "Unity" was the flagship for the operation which generally saw around 70% of the Republic Navy deployed to enforcing the planetary blockade, as well as occasionally supporting ground operations with orbital to surface missile or gun attacks.
The Republic Navy suffered no losses during the campaign and did not engage any armed ships but did stop dozens of ships and destroy two suspected blockade runners.
Operation Hydra The Republic Navy deployed Task Force Green and Task Force Blue a part of Operation Hydra, to track Karkouri and Dhau fleet movement during the war to retake the Hassal League.
There were no fleet actions as neither opposing fleet crossed the border but the Republic Navy gained valuable experience from the operation.
Operation Grover-Redline The Republic Navy deployed Task Force Hammer, Nail and Wrench to Fort Carpenter, destroying the Yakuza Navy in a one sided engagement. Marines were then deployed to the Ogohara starbase and after a short boarding action they seized the shipyard and starbase.
A marine blockading force was left in orbit.
