Linwenido

(a.k.a. Lin)

“I was born a humble farmer, but that matters not for a King, in the year 1023.   King Laysm of the Sironde family, had risen through power via the most violent and overt means possible. Assassinations, loyalists, as well as suppression of dissent. I was brought into this world during to the time of what we call the Great Madness. When I was a small boy of fourteen, in 1037, I was drafted into training for the new King’s upcoming campaign. Which was said to be aiming for a lifetime service of fifty years.   The first war started in 1050, I was twenty-seven years of age. We marched for years on end, I saw hundreds die along side me, and, I commanded hundreds that died. But something changed.   In the third war, of 1065, a soldier of my squadron, caught my attention for a number of reasons. Like I, he had developed a reputation for emerging from the battlefield mostly unscathed, throughout all of his treks.   After fifteen years under my direct command, I began to notice even more what was off about this individual. He spoke in such strange ways, spouting what I assumed was utter youth nonsense. What I did however, take seriously, was his ramblings about a folk legend, despite in every other aspect, him seeming to be completely foreign to the realm.   ‘I am going on a journey to the Black Shadow. If I do not return by the end of two years, then I leave everything to you.’ Such a grave message to deliver after such a positive outlook based on his battle performance. I had not even asked him his name at that point, being as he was just another soldier, albeit an lucky one.   "What is your name? I highly doubt you will, but if you do succeed on your quest, I would like to be able to give you the credit."   ‘My name...you shan’t forget it I hope… it’s Solvune. Matsuko Solvune.’   I can wager you weren’t expecting to hear that name, were you? Why yes, the very same founder of the Kingdom of Solvune! I was in for a shock the next year, when he returned. He told me that he had a method for ending the war in twenty five years, and he needed my help for it, as he was a lowly solider.   There was just something about his determination. He held no disdain for being a soldier, despite referring to himself as lowly. For this, I intended to at the very least, hear him out. ‘I propose that the number of sightings will increase. In order for this plan to succeed, it is imperative that you inform me when word reaches back to you of a reappearance. We can continue normal as otherwise.   By the time the tenth year had arrived, the next century was starting to creep up on us.   With Matsuko’s prediction having come to pass, I full believed his words to me earlier involving ending the war in twenty five years. My own men had began to recount reports of seeing the same figure, but in impossible places, as well as being seen by more than one person at the same time.   Up to this point, such similar tales were never recounted as having multiple simultaneous encounters, and such tales were often recounted with weapons of warfare being destroyed. Tha did not happen this time, which seemed to dispute the earlier tales. For us, that meant that perhaps these tales were more complex than first understood.   At the beginning of 1100, our plan had been set into full motion. Through a vast civilian militia, in combination with the soldiers of my battalion and my platoon, we had become 35,000 in number. I too, am past three quarters of a century now, and have been in battle for over fifty years now.   ‘Why have you not aged?’ I finally asked after what was a long pause our their conversation.   With a warm smile, Matsuko prepared to reveal the whole truth. "Lin… I've been aging for over nine hundred years. Normally my species lives about one hundred twenty stellar cycles. I'm a visitor from far away. We've been warring nearly your entire lifetime. After this I'm going to do my best to forge a nation in which there is hopefully no need for war."   Its was then that the full breath of the exposure he was giving me. A being that ancient, had probably seen war for six of his lifetimes. Yet, here he placed himself subservient to someone else of such a higher standing than him. Why?   I later learned that he committed a grave act upon our world and was going to spend several lifetimes repenting for it by helping as many people as he could.   In the year 1110, The Tyrant King Laysm Sironde was dethroned from power, and the Kingdom of Solvune was enshrined in its place.   The Restoration Act of 1110 removed all of the restrictions placed upon the populace granted the people more autonomy whilst also keeping the power status of the lords and knights of the realm. That unfortunately, is where my tale of this era is cut short, because I was granted an opportunity unlike any other.   My next tale begins in the year 1360, three centuries and thirty-seven years after I was born. Having allowed my family to grieve, I was transported forward. By this time period, the Kingdom was only two and a half centuries old. A species I’d only heard far tales of, residing across the ocean.   They were now a nation of their own, of a similar size to the Dominion of Sironde, coexisting peacefully. Wonderful technology was displayed beyond my wildest imagination. Lighting still had flame, but there were also glass orbs filled with light that were powered with the same energy as lightning! The strangest change that I can see is that, despite it being peace times, there still seem to be training exercises for firearms, If this is not for enjoyment, perhaps I can see some degree of competition? Such exercises could very easily be applied to warfare.   I am however, reassured by one other aspect. Military services is not required, and salaried vacations are earned for years in service. Education has improved dramatically. There are more signs than I’ve ever seen before, proudly displaying the literacy, and especially in the form of solicitations of sale.   One more thing that absolutely delights me is that I am told children are no longer allowed to participate in military service, and the age for volunteering has been raised to thirty. Thirty years of age before they potentially even saw the potential for battle. As I explained earlier, by the time I was thirty, I had already experienced three years of war.   Our families were young, with some wedding as early as fourteen if they feared that the draft would take them away. If one made it to the age of thirty without having died in combat, that was the age in which family life became a consideration.   To think that we would reach such times as to when people volunteered for military service!   I thoroughly enjoyed my time here on Orlon, and I am happy that I have been granted such an extraordinary experience.   I am no novelist, so I am sure this is not going to be more than ten or twenty pages, if even that, but I bid you all farewell in knowing that I am happy with the direction the people of the land are taking. Children are out at play, instead of on the battlefield.   Take care, future generations, I am very hopeful for what the next two and a half centuries bring."
