The Schism
The Schism happened at the end of The Age of Grand Magics as Viskara was unhappy with the world and the Numen as Gods.
They felt that mortals had too much power in their wielding of occult and arcane magic. They felt disgusted that the world was so severely populated by many different species and creatures and that the bloat needed culling.
Viskara, knowing a great power of death would be needed, reached into The Void and pulled back Azdur, The Concept Itself and sealed him away using the energies to create the plane of Abbadon and splitting Azdur's energies to create The Horsemen.
Viskara then moved the end of The Astral Plane into Abbadon which allowed the Horsemen and their Daemon horde to flood throughout the planes and specifically target The Material Plane and the Upper Planes where the Gods lived.
When the hordes hit the mortal realm chaos ensued, many died and were slaughtered and mortals became a minority on a plane ran almost entirely by these new beings. Throughout what would become an 100 year war the gods broke from the heavens and came down to fight against the rampaging horsemen.
It was only though the combined force of Gods and mortals that after over 100 years the horsemen were repelled and resealed in Abbadon. In the final battle of the war over Elentaria, Correl, The Glowing Queen triumphed in her battle with Quanros, The Pale Rider long enough for the tools of Girus, The All Forger and the magic of Exelia, The Knowing Lord to seal the final Horseman back into Abbadon and lock the plane, capturing the enemy force.
The Prime Deities discussed for a long time who would hold the key to Abbadon. They each felt they would be strong enough to ensure the key was kept safe forever, until it was decided that they should give the key to Zelezeth, Lord of the Hells knowing that while he would love to use the powers of Abbadon for his own goals, if he was bound in a contract then he would be incapable of breaking it.
And so it came to pass that the Schism ended, the Horsemen sealed and the universe without its creator. The population of Orchellia had been reduced by nearly 90%, and countless magical and technological discoveries were lost to time. The Elven Kingdom of Lor Anoch is the only civilisation still standing from before this time but many were soon built up during this time in an attempt to collect people to increase the chance of survival, many of these crumbled under the pressure of society. One of the few to survive however was the the group that would go on to become The Dawn Empire.
Seeing the failure of his purge Viskara fled the universe, leaving tears in the sky to The Far Realms his new home, forming what mortals have come to call stars.
The Schism was such a shift in the balance of the world that there is yet to be a name for the current way the world exists, it is simply Post-Schism.
