Butters/Zovosauriel
Butters is the cat, traveling companion, and tutor of Rose of The Abnormals.
Butters is secretly a former Archduke cast to The Material Plane and stuck in the form of a ginger housecat for unknown reasons. While appearing like any other pet, Butters is in fact fully sentient, and has the full awareness and intelligence that you would expect of a Devil of his rank, he can only be understood however by his apprentice, that being Rose.
Butters has in fact had many apprentices during his time on the material plane, although he struggles to remember how many, each meeting some kind of end before they finish a year under his tutelage, all aside for Rose. It was revealed in a dream to Rose that these apprentices had either been corrupted or killed by Dilkitsu, The Genius, a high ranking Devil Prince and seemingly the one who banished Butters to the mortal world. Upon an attack on The Delusions of Grandeur by these corrupted former apprentices under orders from the Prince of Ozero, it was revealed that each of his former apprentices was in fact a female Tiefling, each with pink hair and pink skin, much like Rose.
Butters had no memories of how these apprentices left his tutelage or in fact they had all looked alike, and so alongside Rose doubled their efforts on heading to a grove of Darkwood trees deep in the Bonshall Woods, where Butters had first awakened, hoping to find out more about his past and the reasons for why he had been banished from the hells.
The Darkwood Grove Butters remembered was in fact the entrance to a Temple to Azdur, The Concept Itself, on the grounds of the former manor of an Age of Renewal mage named Oronin Var Ellehion.
As the Abnormals delved deep into the dungeon, they were hit with visions of the manor house back in its splendour, intercut with dark visions of a destroyed house on fire. Butters no where to be seen. It would be revealed through these illusions that Butters was in fact the mage Oronin.
Oronin had been a mage in the Renewal Era who moved himself and his wife to deep in the Bonshall Woods to study the temple to Azdur there, hoping to find the secret to eternal life. As his studies of the temple continued, he slowly became more and more desperate, refusing to accept that he could not crack the mysteries the temple offered. Thus, Oronin reached out to Dilkitsu, in the hopes of accessing his infinite libraries. Dilkitsu accepted the deal, gifting Oronin three devilish cats to watch over him, and promising that he would take his price.
Access to the libraries broadened Oronin's mind, and he soon began to unravel parts of the knowledge hidden to him within the temple. However, the broadened knowledge soon isolated him from his wife, the first time he spoke to her in several months was at the birth of their child, born a pink tiefling.
Oronin continued to isolate himself within his own knowledge for several years, while his daughter grew up in the background of his life. Eventually, his wife grew tired of his isolation, and broke into his study while he was mid-commune with Dilkitsu, Iris screamed at the sight of the devil, causing Oronin to stand, and push his wife out of the room and over the balcony, seemingly influenced by the devil granting him power.
Upon the moment of his wife's death, Oronin ceased to be a person, simply going through the motions of his life. Knowing he should miss her and that his daughter needed a carer, he attempted to resurrect his wife, accidently bringing her back as a Banshee. The undead spirit seemed to not realise her fate however, and instead continued to care for her daughter and husband, until one day she entered her husband's study, and in a moment of clarity screamed in rage, smashing candles against the wall which in turn caused a fire that would take Oronin and his daughter's life, his wife doomed to live on as a spirit forever.
Oronin was cast down into the hells. His appearance changing to a more devilish visage. He rose as an Archduke of Dilkitsu as Zovosauriel.
He would live as Zovosauriel for millennia, working in the grand library of the hells. Until eventually for reasons unknown he would be cast out and sent to the Material Plane, powerless and with no memory of why he was there.
