Hool Marshes
A large area of tidal marshes and wetlands found at the very tip of the Viking Sea. The shallow sea meets flat land, and both form a marginal area of reefs and bars and tiny tidal islands, and mudflats and marshes and meandering streams, around pools and layers of hidden mud. A breeding ground for bugs and reptiles and sinister plant life. It has a terrible reputation, and there are almost no official settlements, though outlaws and other groups find it a convenient place to disappear. And a decent living can be made by anyone willing to fish here, or gather plants in the area.
(Out of the Greyhawk books, though transplanted into this world, where it fits well.)
Geography
The southeastern tip of the Viking Sea blends almost imperceptably into the land, which is low and flat and sodden here. The tides are fairly high, since this is near the tip of the sea, so miles of land is in fact tidal, mudfglats at low tide, inundated at high. Through all this region there are reefs and sand bars and strips of plants that have slowly accumulated to form little islands and bars, all surrounded by water, even often floating on water. Beyond the strictly tidal areas, this is still low and wet, cut through with innumerable streams, forming pools and treacherous islands and sinkholes throughout.
