Samuel Stanley

Samuel Stanley (born 1 March Y1091) is a Tiefling Wizard and second-year necromancy student at the Wizarding University of the Aquatic Kingdoms. He was born a Human, but died in a magic accident in Y1110 and was brought back via Druidic Reincarnation by the Necromancer Mercédès in exchange for becoming one of her assistants, alongside his boyfriend Brad Minors.

Samuel is a 12th-level spellcaster. He uses Intelligence as his spellcasting ability (+9 to hit, save DC 17). Samuel has the following wizard spells prepared:
Cantrip (at will): chill touch, mage hand, message, thaumaturgy
1st level (4 slots): false life, thunderwave
2nd level (3 slots): darkness, gentle repose, wither and bloom
3rd level (4 slots): life transference, revivify, vampiric touch
4th level (3 slots): Evard's black tentacles, phantasmal killer
5th level (2 slots): negative energy flood, reincarnate
6th level (1 slot): Tasha's otherworldly guise

Shade Pilot Forme. As a bonus action, Samuel can summon a torrent of shades to protect himself. He gains the following benefits:

• His base AC becomes 17.
• He gains the ability to see in normal and magical darkness.
• All enemies within a 5 foot radius are effectively blinded, as the shades obscure their vision.
• All of Samuel's attacks and spells deal an extra +3 damage while in this form.

This form lasts for 1 minute, until Samuel is incapacitated, or until he dismisses it as a bonus action. Samuel can enter Shade Pilot Forme up to 5 times per long rest.
Necromantic Bond. While in his Shade Pilot Forme, Samuel can gain the healing effect from Brad's negative energy flood.
Bound by Love. If Brad is within 120 ft of Samuel and has less than 10 HP, Samuel has disadvantage on attacks against all targets besides the last one to damage Brad. He must use all his movement to move closer to Brad until immediately adjacent to him, provoking opportunity attacks as he does so.

Actions

Samuel's Sinkhole. Ranged Spell Attack:+9 to hit, 60 ft., one target. Hit: 6d4 psychic damage, and the target must roll 1d8 and subtract that number from their next attack roll, ability check, or saving throw.
Catastrophize (Shade Pilot Forme only). Samuel summons anxious spirits to surround one creature within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 17 WIS save or be stunned until the start of Samuel's next turn. On a failure, they also take 13 (3d8) psychic damage and Samuel regains the same amount of HP. On a success, they take half damage, aren't stunned, and Samuel does not regain hit points.

Reactions

Arcane Echo. When Axel or Brad casts thunderwave, Samuel can use his reaction and a spell slot of at least first level to cast thunderwave at the same time. If the area of the spells overlap, a target in the overlapping area is affected only by the first spell cast.
Hellish Rebuke. When Samuel is hit by an attack, he can use his reaction to rebuke the creature that damaged him, momentarily surrounding them with hellish flames. The creature must make a Dexterity saving throw. It takes 2d10 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Once used, Samuel can't use this ability again until he finishes a long rest.

General Physical Condition

Like many tieflings, Samuel is tall and muscular, at roughly six feet and eight inches. His skin is deep red, and his horns are curly, black, and ridged, like a ram's horns. He carries himself awkwardly and is noticeably clumsy.

Personal history

Samuel was born to two prominent officers of the Liberty Coast Naval Base, Robert Stanley and Samantha Stanley. Samantha died due to complications of the birth and could not be revived, so he was raised by his father alone. Robert threw himself into his work and made the rank of Major General by Y1100, while he raised Samuel largely on the naval base and with expectations of following in his footsteps as a sailor.
Samuel was never more than a mediocre sailor. He spent time goofing off with his friend and fellow officer's son Frederico, and occasionally reading about magic from the battle mages' tower library. He enrolled in the navy on his 17th birthday, but started secretly applying for entry to various wizarding colleges almost immediately. When he received a scholarship to the Wizarding University of the Aquatic Kingdoms for entry in late Y1109, his father forbade him to go, but he ran away and joined the school anyway. Despite his shyness, Samuel fit in much better at wizarding school than at the naval academy, finding new friends and even his first boyfriend within his first two quarters at the school.
In late October Y1110, while the WUAK boats were docked at Urbana al-Sona, an accident believed to have been caused by a passing Wildmage left ten dead, including Samuel. His boyfriend Brad was nearby and rushed him to the necromancy department, begging Professor Mercédès to save his life. She agreed to do so via Druidic Reincarnation, on the condition that Brad and Samuel repay her by serving as her necromancy assistants.
It is unclear why Professor Mércèdes's spell brought Samuel back as a tiefling. He has noticeably struggled with his new body, as well as with the superstition and stigma tieflings face in his native Brightwater. However, he has also forged a number of enduring friendships, including with Loge Haderaa and Nekrotzar , as well as an incredibly close bond with Brad.
