Beholden

Whether through an intentional pact, a trick of a contract or covenant, or a faux pas within extraplanar travel, a mortal can become beholden to a Fiend, Fey, or other extraplanar entity, bound to them by magic until fulfilling a promise or successfully petitioning for their release.   In legends of adventurers, the most common way to become beholden to another is to form a Warlock pact. The warlock enters into this contract willingly and enjoys access to granted magic. Similar contracts can instead grant uncanny luck, physical attractiveness, great wealth, or extraordinary talent and intellect.   However, these contracts are not without consequence. Some beholden undergo subtle physical changes, such as a change in eye color or a permanent tattoo-like mark appearing on their skin. These marks are considered bad luck by the superstitious, and in some places cause those affected to be shunned. Many report the extraplanar entity speaking to them inside their heads, affecting their dreams, or appearing to them in visions.   The most permanent consequence to being beholden is a loss of freedom for one's Soul. Instead of being judged by Osiris and taken into the custody of one's personal god upon death, the soul of someone still beholden becomes the permanent property of the extraplanar entity. Those beholden to fiends become devils or demons themselves, while those beholden to the fey might become a Banshee, Sorrowsworn, or Sluagh. In the most extreme cases, such as that of the Fools of the Fey, one's soul can simply be destroyed forever.
