Shield Sword

Protects while it Attacks; Attacks while it Protects

"The logical conclusion for optimizing both offense and defense."

"What." - Sword Knight and Shield Knight simultaneously.

Honestly, this one is rather self explanatory. The Shield Sword is a massive, almost unwieldly blade with a heater shield forged at its center. About the size of a Valkyr, in fact. Although the shield is still concave, if only slightly, it lacks a proper handle. Y'know, the multiple straps and what not. In its place is a single handhold for ease of maneuverability and quickly swapping from offense to defense and vice versa.

The Shield Sword is more of an idea than just an item. One that can come in all sorts of sizes, builds, materials, and cultural styles. In addition, it's also one of the most popular weapons for enchantment and modification for no other reason than, well, just look at the fucking thing. If you could swing that thing around you'd probably want to make it as cool as possible too.
Shield Sword

Equipping this automatically gives you the Greatsword moveset from Monster Hunter.
The Rune of Weapon Transmutation turns it into a Charge Blade.

Rarity

  • Uncommon

Type

  • Non-Magical Weapon/Shield

Association

Common Price

  • 35gm

Additional Notes

  • The hybrid nature of this weapon makes it compatible with a Rune of Weapon Transmutation, allowing the weapon to morph into a greataxe with the shield serving as the blade.

Mechanics

  • In the context of a game, equipping this would be like equipping both a sword and a shield and getting the benefits of both.

  • In combat, the user can swap between Sword Stance and Shield Stance for different buffs/abilities.

  • I also personally believe that equipping any great- weapon should automatically give you some form of spin to win ability. Or at the VERY least a passive cleaving effect.

Author's Notes

Honestly when it comes to the loot I've made, this is one of my favorites. I just like weapons that feasibly make sense but have a distinct layer of fantasy bullshit to make it interesting. That and also the Rune of Weapon Transmutation idea that I thougt of AS I was writing this giving me the perfect reason/explanation for including the morph weapons from Monster Hunter. Fun fact, I'm a die-hard Switch Axe main in Rise. Literally the most fun weapon in the entire game and I can prove it mathematically and defend it in a court of law. That's all, have a good one!

The question now remains: when will we get a sword shield?

Reminds me of the stats for the "Broadblade" in DND 3.5. It was a short sword that provided a bonus to AC when you weren't using a shield in the off-hand, but it was pretty neat in that it was as you described, an offensive-defensive weapon. The Art is awesome! : D

I looked into it after reading this and I'm absolutely convinced I can get some SOLID inspiration from 3.5, and perhaps PF1e while we're at it cause I LOVE crunchy RPGs in general, thanks for the fun fact!!!

SOLID inspiration, absolutely! : D 5.0 is great but I think it's better for one-shots! 3.5 & PathFinder is so much better for long-term, epic play!   Btw, I've been wanting to ask you a question: is there a way I can contact you privately? There's something I've been wanting to ask you for MONTHS now! Is it ok if I shoot you a msg to your Discord?

100% agree! While I have the most experience with 5e there came a point where I was making SO much homebrew content that it was clear to me I just wanted a crunchier system, and funnily enough PF2e is about as perfect a match as you can get for Oniran. Like it was actually kinda messed how up perfectly it fit to the point where some of the rules and systems are what I would've come up with for 5e ANYWAY vbfjsfbvjfd   Yeah you can absolutely DM me, I'm in the WA server with the same pfp so it should be easy to find me!

Suhweet! And yes! I'm developing a TTRPG and I'm heavily influenced by 3.5 and Pathfinder, as these were just rly, RLY customizable! I'm hoping to bring that to my own system!   Thanks, Jontaro! I'll be in touch later today!
