Dragonwulf Plate

And so the Hunt Begins

"Whether you're alone or with a pack, all it takes is a single look for your foe to realize their demise is not a threat, but a promise."

The Dragonwulf Plate is primarily a leather pauldron lined with fur and adorned with the skull of a Dragonwulf, a draconic variant of the common wolf (But I'm sure you could sniff that one out). The pauldron is secured to the body with additional leather that serves as a breastplate, although it only effectively covers half of the user's chest.

The draconic nature of the skull renders the armor magical by default, but even if it was mundane it would still serve as a status symbol or mark of prestige in the more war-oriented Valkyrian villages of The North.

It is said that the first of its kind was a trophy. Crafted by a hunter who single handedly defended his village from a Dragonwulf with nothing but a rope, his bare

hands, and his indomitable spirit. Those who don this armor are believed to be blessed by that spirit, if only a small fraction of it, fueling them throughout a battle as long as one condition is met: the hunt never stops.

The exploits of those who have invested in the Dragonwulf Plate never lack in ferocity. Valkyr with dozens of arrows embedded in their flesh yet endlessly pursuing their target, Elves unmatched in speed and perception cleaving through enemies without lending them so much as a chance to react, Knights single handedly overpowering the archvillains of their stories as if they were just Kobolds, all with a common through-line for their victims. First you see the bloodlust in their eyes, then you hear the howling of wolves, then, as a fiery orange glow outlines both your hunter and your increasingly trembling form, you realize you have been marked for death.

Type

Common Price

  • 1,500gm

Additional Notes

  • "The hunt never stops", while vague, is a lot simpler than one may think. You are granted its power in battle as long as you pick a target and pursue only that target until they're dealt with.

Mechanics

  • In the context of a game, this straight up just gives you an ability score boost for either STR or DEX. (This item is geared more for melee)

  • Marking an enemy can increase your damage against them, boost your speed as long as you're pursuing them, or perhaps even give you the benefits of raging as long as you have an active hunt.

Author's Notes

Okay so fun fact, this was actually one of the first items I've ever designed for Oniran. The concept has been consistent since the very beginning too, an armor piece that mixes the playstyles of a Ranger and a Barbarian with VFX heavily inspired by either the Dead Man's Plate VFX from League of Legends or Warwick's Blood Hunt VFX also from League of Legends. I used to play League of Legends, how's that for some obscure Jon lore? I wouldn't be surprised if I end up adding more to it in the future but as of right now I think this is solid.   Also when the hunt begins both you and your target canonically hear the "Engaged" OST from Halo: Reach (The music that plays in one of if not the BEST cutscene in the entire Halo series that you need to do yourself a favor and watch, literally peak fiction). That's all, have a good one!
