Douji Species in Nys | World Anvil

Douji

Douji is the name the great reptiles of Doujate go under. Among them, there are many different species with drastically different characteristics, from their dimensions and body shapes to social behaviours and habitats. They share a pretty high level of lethality for humanoid species.   The Zitar succeeded in taming some doujin species and using them in battle, thus gaining great power, only matched by the magic-wielding Iruir.   Scholars usually divide doujin according to the number and type of limbs: they can have zero or two wings and zero, two or four legs, for a total of up to four limbs. Six-limbed doujin, with four legs and two wings, are not present in Doujate.   The following table summarizes the name of the doujin, according to the usual division:

0 wings 2 wings
0 legs Lostouji, snake-drake Selose, winged-snake
2 legs Zikrystouji, crawling-drake Iskidouji, flying-drake
4 legs Rayrmadouji, four-legged-drake -

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Doujin are the most prominent characteristic of Doujate, to the point that the name of the region itself means "land of drakes". There are almost no doujin in any other part of Nys, except for some lostouji species.   Scholars used to say that this is due to Doujate being the only region with reasonably warm weather, enough food sources and not entirely covered in dense forests, which would make large animals more unlikely. Since the Undead War, the High Priestesses of the Church of the Moon claim they are the protectors of Doujate, bestowed upon the land by the Goddess herself, by which their faithful worshippers can endure the difficult fight against the Abyss. The idea spread quickly among the people, eager to feel protected by the divine.   Zitan scholars argued, and still argues sometimes, against these supposed lies, but with no avail. They mostly said it was a cunning move to steal a zitan achievement, the domestication of some doujin species, and making it an iruin blessing.
