Freedom League

A militant, underground league of various separatist groups that wanted to dissolve the Federation into constituent planets. Popular in the early years of expansion, their influence waned as it became clearer how impractical it was to leave the Federation. They are considered a predecessor to the First Interstellar People's Coalition.

Structure

The Freedom League was a coalition of organizations and planets that opposed the expansion of the Federation. As such it was less a centralized organization and more of a movement. The movement was divided in two parts - the nationalists who made up the ring-wing of the Freedom League, and the Anarchists and Socialists elements made up the left. The right and the left of the Freedom League was often at odds, which severely impacted their ability to coordinate.

Public Agenda

The Freedom League opposed the expansion of the Federation. They believed in the self-determination of individual planets to freely associate.

History

Nobody knows exactly how the Freedom League started, but it is assumed the the Hive Wars heavily delayed Federation expansion. When the Federation defeated the Human Hives, they turned their attention to the worlds who had been developing on their own for decades.   Many of these worlds resented the Federation's reach. Protests demanding secession forced brave words from planetary governments. Ultimately, resistance to the Federation was purely symbolic. Even combined the separatists worlds had no fleet to resist the broader Federation.   The Freedom League went underground. Instead of confronting the Federation directly, they assisted anti-Federation and resistance movements within the Federation. The most high profile was the the Undine War, a highly unpopular conflict which seemed to reignite the flames of revolt for a time.   When the beduka of Undine defeated Taurus Mining's mercenaries, instead of declaring independence, they joined the Federation on their own terms. This was a tremendous morale blow to the Freedom League as they hoped Undine would be the first world of many.   Around 2215, with many of the separatist guerilla conflicts now being resolved diplomatically, the Freedom League was rapidly deteriorating. They started a terrorist campaign, targeting planetary government officials who they considered "collaborators". Increasingly unpopular, the Freedom League carried out its last bombings on 2230, afterward dissolving on its own accord.

Disbandment

After the failures of the 23rd century separatist conflicts, there was a general loss of confidence that the Federation could fall. The right-wing elements of the Freedom League disbanded into the military, while the leftists fled into Nocte Ventus to become the Syndic Collective.
