The Avaronian Doom

The Avaronian Doom is a prime example of why one should never resort to the use of Chaos Magic even in the most dire circumstances. Let the ruins of the ancient Avaronian capital and the lifeless lands around it be a lesson to you all.
— High Sage Syronikir
During the final battle in the Pavan-Avaronian Wars the Avaronian Empire met a sudden and violent end. As the Avaronians were unable to hold of the attackers and performed a gruesome ritual in an attempt to stop the invaders. Hunderds of slaves were sacrificed in an attempt to stop their demise. However the ritual failed and caused the entire destruction of the region. Today this event is known as the Avaronian Doom and it still affects the region to this day.

Siege of Bagor

Pavan-Avaronian War

Before the armies of the Archon Alliance started their march towards the Avaronian capital of Bagor, there had been several centuries of wars. The Avaronian Empire was weakend by the Dragon Scourge which allowed the Humans to claim more and more territories in Farlis. When the Dwarves managed to claim territories in the north they effectively cut off the heartlands from the Empire's territories in central Farlis.   This was an opportune time for the Archon Alliance to take the eastern Farlis territories to even further isolate the heartlands. After claiming them they marched through the Doromir Mountains towards the heartlands while Dwarven armies marched from the north east. With a large portion of the Avaronian army still occupied with trying to reclaim Dwarven conquest, the armies managed to quickly advance through the heartlands.

The Siege

The Avaronian capital of Bagor, as expected, was not easy to conquer. But after a month of attempts the armies managed to create a breakthrough. The fighting in the city itself was fierce but eventually the Avaronians managed to create a good defensible position around the Skypeak. Even though it was never intended as a fortress its magically strengthened base ensured that it could withstand siege weapons.   But the Avaronians knew that it would only be a matter of time before they Human and Dwarven armies would overwhelm them. As it reinforcements would not arrive in time they decided that the only option left to them was the use of dangerous Chaos magic.Hunderds of slaves were sacrificed to perform a gruesome ritual. Although they intended to use this to only destroy the armies below they were not able to contain it.

The doom of an empire

Destruction of Bagor

A gigantic surge of energy was released from the Skypeak which did not only destroy the building itself but lay waste to the entire city of Bagor and the region around it. All life on the peninsula on which Bagor was located was extinguished in the blink of an eye. Not a single soul survived the siege. Much of the last moments of this event are therefore shrouded in mystery.   The only accounts are from those that were far enough from the blast to not have been caught in the blast. They reported how the sky was suddenly filled with a purple light. When they looked at the origin they saw an explosion of a size they never saw which was soon followed by an deafening sound. Some even claim that it could be heard even past the Doromir Mountains.

Avaronian Accounts

The only reason that we know why the Doom occurred is thanks to Avaronian Accounts. The Avaronians at the Skypeak had contact with the closest reinforcement through magical means. They were notified of what the trapped Avaronians would attempt once they heard that timely reinforcements were out of question.

Lasting Effects

Even though the explosion itself only lasted a short while it soon became clear to all that witnessed it that it was not the end. Once the light had settled down a large Chaos Tempest started expanding from Bagor. In one week it had engulfed the entire heartlands region but was luckily kept contained by the Doromir Mountains. Life became to dangerous for the inhabitants of the region thus forcing the remaining Avaronians and enemies to retreat.   The Bagor penisula soon became affected by Chaos Corruption and many other areas soon followed suit. The tempests in the region lasted around 33 years before dissipating. The only people who returned after they stopped were the Dwarves, who manged to remain safe within the Doromir Mountains. By the time the tempests subsided all of the Elves had moved further west to the Avaronian successor nations.   Eventually the Dwarves settled in the region once more. The Chaos Corruption had largely receded with only the Bagor peninsula, which had become an island, still being affected. To this day this island is still regularly devestated by Chaos Tempests.

No more Empire

With their core region gone the remaining Avaronians territories surrendered to the Archon Alliance The remainder of the Avaronian Empire was reduced to the inner regions of Farlis and the pratice of Mackevism was banned. Eventually the remaining Avaronian territories would disband into several smaller nations.   The Avaronian Doom however would go on to have an affect on the other nations that were involved as well. The only heir of the Archon Alliance and the well liked Protector of the Arendor States both perished in the blast. This caused a crisis to emerge in the Archon Alliance which eventually led to it abandoning their conquests in Farlis. In the Arendor States some the cohesion that had been present during the latest war started to fade, especially since no real charismatic person arrived to unify the states.

Indeed, the Avaronian leaders were not nice people to be around. Kinda backfired in the end but sadly many other lives were lost as well :(

When magic goes BOOOM...
Well there is a reason why they call it a "last resort" and not "first choice", it always cost you more than you may gain

Indeed, some magic is better off not being used at all.
