Lofior

Watch out for people with a redish hue in their eyes. Lofior is a clever one but for those with great senses there is always a way of knowing if the person before them is real or not.
— Eregr saying

Lofior is the god of many faces and curiously also the one who has many interpretations. The followers of the Erergr pantheon view him as a betrayer while the Daski Elves see him as their protector and savior.

Life

Origin

As fo the origin of Lofior both opposing sides agree at least. Lofior is believed to have originally been one of the gods assigned to the Elves just like many others in the Eregr pantheon. Given that he was quite charismatic he quickly became the right hand of the leader of the gods, Indovir. At the end of the long war between the various gods Indovir would perish which in turn would cause the cataclysmic event Magicfall.   It is in this exact moment that the various views differ. Followers of the main Eregr pantheon claim that Lofior betrayed Indovir because he wanted to take Indovir's power. According to them Indovir chose to bring his Divine Vessel to stop that from happening and causing Magicfall by accident.   Followers of Lofior, however, claim that Lofior actually tried to save Indovir from an assassination attempt by the goddess Ifelian. When Indovir was mortally wounded he asked Lofior to steer his vessel into the capital to keep Ifelian at bay.   Other religions on the other hand don't even mention Lofior at the moment of Indovir's death. To them the choice was completely made on his own accord.

Relationships

Lofior is the patron god of the Daski Elves but is regarded as more as a trickster and deciever god by the rest of the Erergr pantheon. Whatever the truth really is Lofior actively opposses the death godddess Ifelian and keeps the Lower Realms safe in the process. For this reason people still make sacrifices to him regularly to protect them against the undead and corrupted creatures from below.   During elections the followers of the pantheon even hold a ritual to ask Lofior to not interfere. The common fear is that if this is not done that Dopplegangers would manipulate everything.

Characteristics

The strange thing about Lofior is that nobody really agrees on how he looks. Followers of the Eregr pantheon often depict him as a Daski Elf with horns and dark red eyes. Daski Elf depictions on the other hand depict him as a rather handsome Daski Elf in fine clothing, often wearing dark blue and golden colours. In these he is also quite often shown to have several scars on his face as a result from his close proximity to Magicfall.   None of these depcitions actually really matter though since Lofior, as the god of many faces, can shapeshift into any humanoid form he desires. Many, however, still believe that these depictions at least show Lofior's preferred appearances.

History

After Magicfall

What events transpired during Magicfall differs from account to account but what happenend right after is a complete mystery. There are no mentions of him for at least several centuries after the cataclysmic event. Many theorise that even though he was a god, he still needed time to recuperate from the crash of the Divine Vessel and Magicfall.

Loforia

The first time he reappears is in Daski accounts. According to legends the Loforia faction of the Daski stumbled upon a giant metal construction which some believe was a Divine Vessel. This artifact of a bygone age was found in a cavern deep underground although still somehow dimly lit. Lofior appeared before this group and promised a great future if they followed him. And so the mysterious city of Loforia is said to have been build.

God of many Faces

Many centuries after Loforia was built small bits of info on Lofior managed to find its way to the surface world. It is difficult to know what is really the truth but most at least agree that Lofior's influence stretches far and wide. His elite force, the Lofior Chosen are said to be used as a sort of large scale spy network that operates on every part of the surface world.   Another common belief is that Lofior even created Dopplegangers, beings who can easily change shape, to this end. This has led to many followers of the Erergr religion to be cautious of others as one could never know who is an agent of Lofior.   On top of that it is widely known that Lofior is quite proficient in Mind Magic. Which makes it even easier for him to create illusion or even modify memories.

Ifelian

From his home in Loforia, Lofior often sends brigades out into the Lower Realms to strike at Ifelian. Without Lofior oppossing her the area would already have been flooded with vile creatures such as the Narkids for a long time.

I cannot but think of of Apocalypse from the 90s X-men show. "Evil? I am not malevolent, I simply am"   If you really want a deep dive into how ancient polytheistic people saw their gods, check out this article written by an awesome history professor. One some level it doesn't matter if a god is evil or not, you want to be on the god's good side because he is a god.   https://acoup.blog/2019/10/25/collections-practical-polytheism-part-i-knowledge/   This is how I applied it to my world.   https://www.worldanvil.com/w/scarterra-scalenex/a/how-ordinary-mortals-worship-the-nine-ritual

Thank you for the links! Yes perhaps 'evil' was a bad choice of words so I changed the wording. I also addes some stuff about what people still do to worship because that was not added yet.

Feel free to check my entries for the World Anvil Worldbuilidng Awards if you want to see what I am up to!

He is an interesting god. And the different perspectives on him are an interesting angle. I especially like the images you used. Above all the stained glass window, as I use them for my gods as well :D

I don't think he is evil, per se. I like the idea that people have different perspectives on him, and there are different versions of the myths.
