Crystal Terror

I hate the chaos corrupted lands. Even the birds there all want to kill you.
— Yamaderis
When you are not killed by a Chaos Tempest itself a crystal terror encounter will likely do so. These fearsome creatures can only exist within these tempest or in corrupted lands once affected by them. They can vary greatly in size with some sources claiming to have seen a specimen with a wingspan of 200 meters.   Luckily most of the crystal terror are closer to the size of an eagle but in large groups they can be a serious threat nonetheless. It is always a good idea to keep an eye on the sky as well when travelling through Chaos Corrupted land.

Physiology

As the name would suggest the crystal terror is made primarily out of purple crystals. From those who have slain these kind of beings we know that these crystals are actually Chaos Falls. Depending on the size of the crystal terror this can result in quite a big supply for the slayer.   When dissected the smaller of these crystal terrors still have remnants of their former selves under the layers of crystals. In most cases these seem to have been at some point regular birds but just as easily larger birds. However, there does not seem to be a direct link between the size of the original bird and the size that it becomes as a crystal terror. Larger specimens, from 10m onwards, have lost all former semblence as every aspect of their body is crystallised.

Food

From various reports of those that have studied the creatures it seems that they do not require food in the regular sense. The crystal terrors do not use their mouths to eat but rather use their wings to absorb energy from living beings.   Most of their 'food', however, comes from the storms they inhabit themselves. They are often seen flying high up in Chaos Tempests where they frequently absorb lightining strikes to get their nourishment needs.

Climate

Crystal terrors thrive in areas affected by Chaos Tempests but thanks to their secondary form of nourishment they can still survive outside these areas. If they do travel into normal nature they quickly become a menance to all wildlife.   For some still unkown reason they like to release small splinters of their body in uncorrupted lands which grow into Chaos Falls. Some believe this helps them feel more at ease in those areas but others think that perhaps they seek to spread corruption. One thing is for certain, this behavior is different from the crystal terror's reproduction process.

Reproduction

The regular way for a crystal terror to come in existence if for a regular bird to be hit by lightning in a chaos tempest. The body then falls to the ground and slowly crystallised over the course of 3 days after which it reanimates. It is believed no part of the original personality of the bird remains although this has never been verfied.   The current theory is that crystal terrors also can reproduce in a way. As their are hit by lightning over the course of their lifetime they grow larger in size. Once they are large enough they are able to release larger parts of their body which fall to the ground. After a period of 1 week the part that fell cracks open and from it a new crystal terror emerges. To some degree this makes the reproduction process of crystal terrors similar to that of birds and their eggs.

Very interesting physiology. Are there other types of crystal monsters from the Chaos Falls?

Thanks! Yes quite a few actually but many are not written down yet. One that is written down is the corrupting vortex, a living small storm. But there are even more fiercesome monsters which I will write out at some point :)

Even an eagle sized bird can be dangerous if you are only as big as a gnome - I don't want to imagine what a crystal terror would do to them... except from stealing theire energy of course.
Nice Article!

I feel like the word 'bird' doesn't quite capture these creatures. They sound majestic, though you probably wouldn't want to see one in real life.

Fascinating concept and I love the idea and I think even a small tit can be scary so I need to know: how or why do these birds kill when they feed on energy from lightning - is it more of a defense, just because they can or are they driven to it by Chaos Falls? You wrote that birds struck by lightning in Chaos Falls become these things. How come birds fly into them voluntarily - does Chaos Falls override the primal instinct to avoid them or are they drawn to it?

Some great questions. The attacking is certainly them being driven by the Chaos Falls as most creatures affected by chaos corruption act aggresively and without seemingly much reason, at least to outsiders.   The original birds are not intentionally flying to the lightning. Most of them were created during the creation of zones plagued by the chaos storms and others find themselves accidently in these storms as they can pop up randomly near the edges of these zones. The rather strange lightning in these stoms makes it also difficult to predict as it does not follow a straight path to the ground but rather tries to find living beings.

I really like the reproduction cycle of being struck by lightning feels fitting for these flying creatures. I wonder if anyone in your world has attempted to farm them to create a legion of birds?   Also I am definitely taking inspiration from your falls material for my own version of crystals called Shiver Gems (I hope you don't mind) Keep up the good work :)
