The Red Lion Guard

A king needs his protectors and the Red Lions are there to do that. Never blinking and fearing no man, they ride with their king so that he will see another day.
— Everam, Teller of Nimenra
A king's guard should be the best of the best, protecting and serving so the king will not die at the hands of others in the field of battle and outside of it. With a crest of the royal cat creature, the lion, on their armour The Red Lion Guard serves the King of Ravero and protect him. Many of those who serve among the Red Lions serve for life and come from nobility.

Manpower

The Red Lions are mostly recruited from the nobility. Fourth, fifth and other non-inheriting children strive to make it on their own and to become a part of the royal guard to their king is one of several. The Kingdom of Ravero have had the Red Lions as exclusive to nobility for as long as many can remember. It was only quite recently during the reign of Asalon Lionhiron's father, Wurn II Lionhiron, that non-nobility were able to attempt to become part of the royal guard. Like most parts of the Renvaren military, no women are allowed to serve if not in disguise or for very, very special reasons.
The guard consists of 100 men who can interchange with each other for the duty. At most times 25 join the king in his journeys while at least 50 join him on the battlefield if not all.

Equipment and Weaponry

Swords, shields, lance and mace are the weapons of the guard. On horseback, it is only quite recently that the lance was adopted by the Red Lions having only been used the last 100 years by them. King Asalon IV Lionhiron asked their leader to look into how the royal guard could be more effective on the battlefield, especially as they tended to be used as shook cavalry beyond being protectors.
Their unique armour consists of a red lion, a symbol of royalty and courage, on their chest in addition to the symbol of Rhyn, a Willowtree, representing the Gods' protection on the battlefield. It is a black-red colouration and it is said to take over a year for a blacksmith to make one chest piece due to the colouration. Each set of armour is a guard's responsibility to maintain. Each guard is also given a thorough breed horse which is bred to be strong and muscular, able to face down humans without too much fear.
