Svirth

Svirth is a personal retinue to a Orfordian Herre. This unit usually stays with the Herre all the time during a battle but some greater Herres have several that takes part in battles. Most of them consists of the strongest warriors selected by Rus Feast or other combat trial. Many also have their close friends' sons in these units.

The amount of people in a Svirth varies from herre to herre. Most tend to have a loyal retinue of 20-30 men but some who have a large family or friends circle can have a much larger one. The largest ever told in tales are of the Chief-king of Orfordhwelm Hjort, who had 212 men. Sons from other herres or higher titles are more than likely to be given a leadership within the svirth but also a responisbility to be the face of the friendship and trust between two friends. Misuseing this trust to be in the svirth have larger reprucotions on the herre whos son has wronged or deemed to be of bad character than the son themselves.

Equipment and Weapons

Most svirth are armed by their herre. As they tend to be used as a personal guard they are given armour, swords, shield, spears or axes depending on the herre's will. Other herre have their svirth as shock troops with heavy armour, two handed weapons and all the training needed to carry them. This makes pointing out a single common factor amongst the svirth a hard task for anyone.
