Commonly, weights are made out of either slag from the process of making iron or cast iron. But some merchants might be feeling that they can make a good trade with another merchant, or someone they might think going to be a good customer. It is at that moment they will use the silver weights, the measurement tools for weighing things, but completly made out of silver.

Significance

Many commoners see these small weights as no more than a way to show off wealth and attract customers. While there might be truth to that statement, there is some deeper meaning to them. Between merchants, it is known that when one brings out their weights for a standard affair or uncommon one, they are coming with a good price. There might be an "extra" bag of flour to the baker, an extra pound-livre of food or ore, many are using it as a gesture between merchants when they trade, telling the other that a better price is nowhere to be found... There is some secret way to communicate in "their own tongue" so to speak. A 50g silver weights mixed with a set number of 50g normal ones might tell other merchants to stay away from certain customers or to drive a hard bargain with them. This way of communicating is more common among travelling merchants who sometimes are not welcome to settlements. To learn this way of hidden communication is an art in itself and to see through ways to tell others how they should deal with you is not an easy task.

There are quite a lot of merchants handling at least a small set from 25g(rams), and 50g, 100g. Smiths are not against making these, although it is illegal to meltdown currency to make them... In a town of 1000, there might be 100 merchants, travelling and non-travelling that have these.
