Serverius [English]

Few times there are appropriate name for things of this world, but Serverius is apptly choosen for its... severity.
— Everam, Teller of Nimenra
Serverius is not only a name of a demon noble family, but also a disease that was a blight upon Nekuram. Despite the belief that its severity has given it the name, there is still many who has seen the effects of it first hand and barley survived.

Transmission & Vectors

It is believed to be a disease that spread though some sort of contact, but there is no confirmed way of telling.

Causes

Figuring out the cause has been a task physicians have dealt with for several years. The current hypotheses hold that it is caused by irregular magical particles or some sort of imbalance within the body's systems.

Symptoms

Early symptoms of Serverius relate to a red-white rash that appears on arms and upper body. This is a prelude to coughing, fever and chills that appear two to three days after the rash manifests itself. Depending on the magical capabilities of the being affected in question, their magical abilities begin to hamper their recovery due to it accelerating or making the symptoms more and more server after a week. This can be chilling of the body to freezing temperatures to combat the fever, while the increased coughing is attributed to involuntary trying to use magic to impede it.
Some have experienced lacerations and/ crackling of the skin which starts to bleed, while uncommon, many met their unfortunate death due to this and infections. The most serious cases eventually lose limbs due to what seems like blood poisoning, muscle withering or permanent paralysis.

Prognosis

Serverius keeps its victim bedridden for several weeks when its strongest symptoms manifest itself. While there are survivors that have combated the disease, they had to endure for three to four weeks with blood loss, heavy coughing, high fevers and even some loss of limbs and paralysis. For many, it is fatal due to infection, organ/respiratory failure and coma.

Affected Groups

While all groups are affected regardless, the people with high magic affinity and power has an increased chance for worse symptoms and damage. Mages fear it.

Prevention

Over the years, Serverius took its course on all kinds of Nekur, except for Salandites it seemed. Physicians related it to their weak magical affinity inhabited by the species but that would still make them affected some said against the theory. Instead, Salandites was shown to survive a lesser version of Serverius, dubbed Un-Serverius as a joke by physicians. This manifested itself thought what seemed like a light version with coughing and fever, which seemed like a normal cold. A former physician, Carvem Gest, began to look into what made Salandites different from the rest fo demon-kin. Except for the obvious lizard related oddities with Salandites, they had their own mixtures of herbs, bread, goat- and cow milk and a herb called Girdei as a treatment for colds. Girdei's juices combined with the mixture of herbs and hot milk created a potent antiviral drug against colds but also having a strong effect on Serverius. It hindered the magical powers to affect the symptoms and worsen patients. With this, Gest moved to make the Girdei plant more available, as it only grew in the central-eastern parts of Nekuram, to combat Serverius. What once caused epidemics and migrations was pressed down.
