Mesogog, Prince of Undeath

"A word of advice, adventurers. Never turn your back on someone you respect or someone you consider a threat."
-Mesogog, to the Headhunters, moments before turning around and walking away from them   Mesogog was the cambion son of Orcus, Demon Lord of the Undead. One of many half-mortal spawns, Mesogog was considered a success by his father's experiments. Orcus charged Mesogog with building an army of enhanced undead, soldiers powerful enough to march upon the The Raven Queen's domain in the Shadowfell and seize her status as Goddess of Death. Mesogog traveled to the Material Plane of Nexus and began his task, orchestrating mass slaughters to provide the bodies needed for his new army. But as is often the case when evil rises, heroes came forward to battle against his terror.   Though they could not kill Mesogog, the heroes ultimately managed to put him under the effect of a powerful imprisonment spell, sealing him deep within the earth. To guard this prison, the heroes founded an Adventurer's Guild to ensure powerful individuals would always be nearby in case he ever escaped. But while Mesogog was placed under lock and key, his lieutenants managed to escape and began working to free him.   Eventually, they were successful, launching a massive attack on the city of Inkhear that had grown around the Guildhall. While their army of undead and duergar allies distracted the adventurers and guards, the lieutenants made their way through the prison's defenses and freed Mesogog, despite the efforts of the adventurers known as the Headhunters to stop them. The Headhunter Artie sacrificed himself so his friends could escape, injuring Mesogog and his lieutenants and forcing them to retreat.   Mesogog was free and eager to resume his work with his 2nd-in-command Levira as the two begin planning their wedding to solidify an alliance between their two dark powers.

Manipulator & Manipulated

Before being freed, Mesogog was contacted by Moltor through the creation of the Grave Orb. Made from a large, polished Gravestone, the Orb was given increased necromantic powers through its connection to Mesogog. The Orb was entrusted to Gulto and taken by the Headhunters when they managed to slay him. This allowed Mesogog to start whispering to Chigiri, who kept the Orb in his possession after it placed a curse of greed upon him. Chigiri did have the good sense to largely ignore Mesogog's whispers, despite Mesogog's attempts to plant seeds of doubt in his mind.   Once Mesogog was freed, he paid a visit to Lady Kemlar with Mira. As an "apology" for not helping to free him, Lady Kemlar conducted a ritual to empower Mesogog with a fraction of Urthemiel, the Destroyer's power. She did this using Urthemiel's scale, acquired from the Headhunters, and the ritual caused Mesogog to unknowingly acquire the Destroyer's weaknesses along with its strength. All the while, Levira was also manipulating Mesogog to help pave the way for ███████ eventual arrival to Nexus.

Battle at the Dragon Forge

When the Headhunters came to the Dragon Forge, Mesogog arrived to confront them. He summoned Shadow Skulls as back-up along with Nadira who immediately went into the Ethereal Plane to fly ahead and lay a trap for the adventurers. Mesogog mocked the party and kept them talking to give Nadira time to work. As they began to retreat, Iskierka (who had guided the party to the Forge) revealed her true identity as the gold dragon Shimmerscale to battle Mesogog and buy the party time.   Though it cost him several minions, Mesogog defeated Iskierka . But he took time to taunt and mock her rather than kill her, allowing the Headhunters to distract him and giving Shimmerscale time to dive into the magma and escape. The adventurers used a magic item to protect themselves with a barrier and Mesogog continued to taunt them, unaware of the threat of the sword Chōmei now in Chigiri's possession. Shortly thereafter, he teleported away with Nadira and his remaining minions.

Defeat and Destruction

While Mesogog was attending to these matters, his other lieutenants were busy building the Gravecannon to destroy Inkhear. When the adventurers mounted a counterattack, Mesogog engaged Dume in single combat. Talking while fighting, he revealed their past history together and the fact that Dume was originally the wizard who imprisoned him with Dume's soul now inhabiting a construct. Mesogog won this duel, destroying Dume for good but becoming weakened enough to leave himself vulnerable to a killing blow from Chigiri.   This only destroyed Mesogog's physical body and his spirit fled up the mountain after blasting Chigiri with a fatal dose of necromantic magic. The remaining Headhunters gave chase, battling Mesogog (alongside Moltor) once again in the Gravecannon's control room. It was a hard and close battle, but the adventurers worked together with Vinnie Vice dealing the final blow that destroyed Mesogog once and for all.
