Giles Pryce Riversong, the Battlemage

"Fireball!"
-Pryce casts his favorite spell   Pryce was a military brat, a member of the Riversong family that had been part of Lothal's military since the nation's founding. Unlike the rest of his family, Pryce had issues with military discipline. For a time, these tendencies were ignored due to his family's reputation and his natural aptitude for magic. This did not last forever and one too many incidents ended with him being discharged. He then applied his skills at the only other place he thought they'd be of use, the Adventurer's Guild. Ever since, he's been steadily rising through the ranks as one of the guild's foremost practitioners of combat magic.   Table of Contents

History

Early Life

Pryce's family has a history of military service and it could be said that his career was decided well before his birth. Magic was just as much a part of the family history as military service and he studied it from a young age. However, that is not to say he was a good student. The young Pryce found magic to be, plain and simply, boring. While other children got to play, he was made to study. The sole form of magic he enjoyed was evocation magic, magic that could conjure fire and other elements to unleash upon the world. Mainly because he (and the other children) considered this particular branch of magic to be very cool.   As soon as he hit 18, his family sent him off to the military. He scored high marks on his efficiency with offensive magic...and an equally offensive mouth. Pryce often found himself saddled with extra duties as a result of insubordination. His family name coupled with his raw magical skill is the only reason his attitude was tolerated. It became suddenly less tolerated when it was realized that while Pryce had great skill with offensive magic, he had virtually no skill with the support spells military mages are expected to learn.   The end result was an honorable discharge that soured an already poor relationship with his family, particularly his uncle Nix Riversong. His family subsequently cut him off from any form of financial support. With nowhere else to go, Pryce looked to the one other place he could think of where his education could be put to use: The Adventurer's Guild.

Adventures with the Headhunters

Pryce spent a fair number of years in the guild where he developed a reputation for firepower. When a monster needed killing by means of fire, explosion, or equally violent measures, Pryce became a go-to solution. He had climbed to Silver-rank by the time he met the group of adventurers known as the Headhunters, joining them to hunt wyverns in the Giantsheel Mountains.   Pryce quickly developed a friendship with Chigiri, who took an instant liking to the ex-military mage's love of explosive magic. Pryce helped the group battle yetis and a wyvern, met Skein, Priestess of the Raven Queen, and found a lost shrine to Stronmaus, god of storm giants, alongside his new friends. Later, Pryce rejoined the Headhunters during the Invasion of the Ants. He took out many ants during the battle with his fire magic, particularly a large charging group that he wiped out with a single Gravestone-enhanced fireball.   He was next seen at the Battle of Inkhear, where Cordelia carried him above attacking trolls to drop fire on them from above. Pryce quickly exhausted his spells and the two flew back to the city, where they spotted the Morlocks real attack and assisted the city guard with defending civilians. They formed a barricade at the Guildhall to defend the Guild's civilian workers from the attacking monsters.

Later Adventures

Pryce later accompanied the Headhunters back to Stronmaus' shrine where the group retrieved one of the 7 Swords. They then traveled to the Black Isles and met the mysterious Lady Kemlar, who seemed to know everything about the party. She hinted at the parts of Pryce's past he wanted to keep quiet, so he kept his mouth shut during the conversation to avoid attracting her ire.   After Mira's betrayal of the guild, Pryce found himself at a table Cordelia chose to sit at while drinking her sorrows away over failing to protect Sir Huntington. Even drunk, she wouldn't reveal exactly what was wrong but Pryce could see she was clearly upset. A little tipsy himself, one thing led to another and the two wound up spending the night together. The next morning, this experience made them realize they had both been admiring each other from afar for some time. They decided to pursue a relationship together and see where things went.   He also participated in the Battle of the Giantsheel Mountains, being one of the first on the frontline. He again expended most of his powerful spells quickly and had to be moved to the triage center after being injured by a duergar. Leliana healed him just in time for him to join the Headhunters for the rest of the battle. He assisted Hugh with destroying the shadow wyvern Void Beast and was nearly captured by another Void Beast, the Nightgaunt, during the battle. Ultimately, he provided key support to the rest of the Headhunters in capturing Moltor and slaying Mesogog once and for all.

After the Shadows Unleashed Campaign

After the war, Pryce returned to the guild and began running a counter organization against the Azure Sorcerers, who were still attempting to harass his friend Chigiri. In time, Pryce's loose collection of non-affiliated magic users became a new sub-group within the guild who rivaled the more traditionally minded spellcasters.   When Cordelia left the guild to join the military, Pryce chose to remain and the two kept in close contact. In time, their budding relationship blossomed and the two married with Cordelia taking Pryce's name.
