Necromancy Physical / Metaphysical Law in Necromancer's Moon | World Anvil

Necromancy (nɛkrəmænsi)

Necromancy is the practice of Magic that involves communication with the dead – either by summoning their spirits as apparitions, visions, or raising them bodily – for the purpose of discovering hidden knowledge, bringing someone back from the dead, or using the dead as a weapon. It also can involve destroying a part of a living body, or manipulating the dead parts of a living person (such as dead flesh or hair). Sometimes referred to as "Death Magic", the magic is suspected to originate from the god of the dead, Shino. The majority of people with necromantic powers were born under the Shindos moon.

Uses

Practitioners believe they can accomplish three things with necromancy: will manipulation, control, and knowledge.
  • Will manipulation affects the mind and will of another person, animal, or spirit.
  • Control via reanimation of the dead
  • Knowledge is allegedly discovered when spirits or the dead provide information about various things. This might involve identifying criminals, finding items, or revealing future events.

Persecution

The Inquisition is devoted to wiping out every necromancer on the island of Albion. The crime of having necromantic magics is punishable by death, and most are put to the stake to be burnt to death. To the Inquisition, fire is the only way to stop the corruption of necromancy from spreading as it stops the body from being resurrected.

Secret Study

Although necromancy is illegal, there are places where necromancers can live and/or study in relative peace (unless the Inquisition get wind of it). One of these places was the magical school of Danholm, which was destroyed in 781. All members of the school were slaughtered and the land purged with lumomancy to remove the corruption of the undead.   Show Spoiler
