Rhiannon Veleda Character in Necromancer's Moon | World Anvil

Rhiannon Veleda (ɹi.ˈæn.ən)

I don't understand why they hate us so much. We've done nothing to them.
— Rhiannon

History

Weak, frail and easily picked on, Rhiannon had a hard time in Danholm before she was ‘adopted’ by Cordell and her ragtag group of friends. She found it difficult connecting with the other children, instead choosing to spend her life with her head in her books or crafting small items out of wood. Though gifted in the mental aspects of magic, she fell behind in the physical demands of being a necromantic caster.
When she wasn’t chosen as an apprentice to one of Danholm’s professors, Rhiannon hid in the corner of the library for days until she was found by a concerned Cordell and Hyun, the latter of which picked her up into one of his tightest hugs. Even though she was emotionally defeated, Awelan convinced Rhiannon to keep up with her studies by regularly stealing restricted books and depositing them on Rhiannon’s bed without a word.
Danholm was destroyed when Rhiannon was between the ages of 16 and 18. The teachers who thought her nothing, the bullies that made her life difficult, all gone in the ash of the Inquisition. As one of the few survivors she'll live as the dead would have wanted, and crush the organisation that purged her home.

Relationships

Rhiannon is of unknown parentage. She was taken to Danholm before she was old enough to have any memories of the people who created her. She, like all of Danholm's residents, created a family of the people who grew up with her. Her last surviving 'family' are Hyun, Cordell and Awelan. Since coming to Hachenberg, Rhiannon has added Whisp to her little family.
She has a semi-romantic relationship with Daveth, a magical healer who works in the Temli Temple, though their relationship has been strained since she confessed to being a necromancer. Recently, they've both been making an effort to repair the rift by spending time together outside of the hospital and aiding each other in their magical pursuits.
One relationship that is going well is her friendly affiliation with Fiedan's Fire Drinkers, particularly her close friend Emby, when she and Daveth saved a member of their guild from a Curse of Life that was inflicted upon them by the Froglodite Mother. When the Feidan's Fire Drinkers went to the Unbekwald, leaving Emby behind, Rhiannon moved into the Feidan compound to keep him company. Together they completed his treatise, allowing him to ascend his magic.
The slum barons she is the closest to are: Nicollo, who may be her closest friend, Francis Wurch, and Robbie Shanks. She's also making waves in the Hachenburg Nobility by becoming close friends with Cicero Adreini.

Familiar

Aubigny is a grey street cat who chose to become Rhiannon's familiar during her first year in Hachenberg. When the bonding ceremony was complete, beyond the standard abilities, Aubigny (Beany for short) was able to cast Death Bolt once a week as well as being able to see Daemonic portals on the full moon.
Rhiannon became stealthier and could weild small blades effectively once they were bonded. Although untested, she also feels she can eat rodents raw without any adverse effects.

Magical Mutations

Rhiannon is plagued with nightmares and regularly screams in her sleep, waking up everyone around her.

Magical Objects

The amulet around Rhiannon's neck removes an hour of a person's memory when it's touched. She also has the Ribbon of Seredipity, gifted from Daveth, that's able to give a flash of inspiration to the wearer.
Rhiannon created and weilds a Shield of Destroy Necromancy.
Under her bed, she has hidden a bottle of brandy that came from an undead ship.

Employment and Skills

Rhiannon started work in the city as a carpenter for Abakhan's Toy Shoppe, but quickly ascended to Journeyman status and outgrew the shop's ability to teach her anything new.
When the Inquisition announced a city-wide search for necromancers, Rhiannon made a deal with the Smythe Family that she will exclusively work for them in exchange for their protection of herself and her family. Currently, she works directly under Siobhan Smythe, the head of the crime family, and is regularly making deals with the Slum Barons.
As part of her job with the Smythes, Rhi worked as an artistic model for Alistair Demmin. After he was sectioned in 781, for cutting out the tongues of three maids, she was sent as an agent to the asylum ran by Dr Otto Braun and schemed her way to his early release.
Rhiannon also regularly invests in Whisp's business dealings, rather monetarily or by providing wooden goods.
