Kelemvor

The Judge, The Great Guide, Lord of The Void

Kelemvor (Kel-M-vor) was a member of The Eres, a mysterious race of beings that created Naneth and the life upon it. Kelemvor, while being an Eres did not take an active part in the creation of Naneth, instead choosing to reside in The Void; a shadowy mirror realm of The Mortal Plane.   During The Betrayal, Kelemvor chose to restrain from the conflict. He merely watched as his fellow kin fought amongst themselves. As The Dead Three were banished to The Underblaze and the other Eres decided to leave Naneth, Kelemvor remained in The Void. As an impartial bystander to the conflict, Kelemvor was chosen by Eldath to become the Judge of the Dead. He was to remain in The Void, where he would greet mortal souls upon death. From there he would shepherd them, with the heroic, brave and kind souls destined to Empyrean or The Feywild. Evil and hateful souls would be directed towards The Underblaze, where they would remain in eternal damnation. The souls of those that exhibited neither good or evil traits would stay with Kelemvor in The Void, becoming shimmering wisps of light upon the desolate landscape. These souls would become subjects of Kelemvor's domain, their souls often becoming specter or other types of ghosts and monsters.

Imprisonment of Strahd Von Zarovich

Unlike most other gods, Kelemvor occasionally takes it upon himself to exact punishments on particularly evil or arrogant mortals. The most famous case of these was a human named Strahd Von Zarovich. Strahd; an arrogant and vain human in life, opposed Kelemvor and the natural way of life, selling his soul to a dark power for immortality. Strahd intentionally denied his soul from Kelemvor, attempting to live forever for selfish purposes.   For this crime, Kelemvor imprisoned Strahd within a Plane of Dread or pocket dimension. Unbeknownst to Strahd, the dark power had fooled him, transforming him into an immortal Higher Vampire. So it was that Strahd became trapped within Barovia, the plane of dread, for eternity. Even death could not spare Strahd now, as his undying soul will now always return to Barovia.

Worshipers

Kelemvor, as the God of Death, commands quite a large following across Naneth. When a mortal dies, the procession or funeral is usually dedicated to their chosen deity, combined with a plea to Kelemvor, to deliver the soul to it's eternal home. Warlocks and Necromancers also tend to deal with Kelemvor, often selling parts of their living soul to him in exchange for great magical power. These followers often carry out personal business for Kelemvor himself, as his disciples upon the mortal plane. This business often requires the destruction of undead, whom Kelemvor considers an abhorrent insult. Grave Clerics have been known to chose Kelemvor as their patron for they also consider undead a blight upon Naneth.   Within his own realm, Kelemvor has become the lord of the souls trapped in The Void. With no other choice, these souls serve Kelemvor. Those with unfinished business upon Naneth often become aggressive spirits or monsters, often finding their way back to the mortal plane to fulfill their purpose. In fact, most of the unnatural monsters upon Naneth, such as Lesser Vampires or Ghosts, come directly from Kelemvor's realm.
