Volis Heartbrand, Arch Inquisitor

Arch Inquisitor Volis Heartbrand (a.k.a. "Bookkeeper", in Inquisitorial circles)

Heresy does not hide in far off fortresses or encroaching armies. True evil hides in books, burred in inconspicuous piles of paperwork and filed forms that will never be opened. There is where the rich and powerful hide their evil secrets, and there is where we will find them, and use the evidence to hang their eviscerated corpses on the castle walls.
~Arch Inquisitor, Volis Heartbrand
Known through the Hamonnet Duchy and beyond, the Arch Inquisitor has had a long and successful career in the Inquisition. He is well known for his diligence, vigilance, and his keen intellect when spotting and identifying mistakes and errors in paperwork, intentional or otherwise. He is also well known for reading through all the reports he is given, and catching any off details or inconsistencies.

Other than ensuring that all laws and rules are followed to the letter by the nobility wherever he goes, his largest accomplishment was the excommunication and following execution of Inquisitor Boris Lauthson, on the grounds of...

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Born a bastard to a count, Volis spent his early childhood hidden away from the world, as his father was keeping his scandalous acts a secret from gossiping ears. He was raised by the maids and guards of the castle, with very little education outside of what he could gleam from talking to his siblings and servants.

In his early teenage years, his fathers charade, affairs, and drunken visits to the maids quarters, were uncovered by an Inquisitor, and after his father was removed from his position, his older brother handed him over to the Inquisitor as a gesture of goodwill, who accepted the guardianship of young Volis, and took him along as an Inquisitorial Aspirant.

Having already acquired a dislike and distrust for the nobility, Volis eagerly picked up all the paperwork the Inquisitor did not want to do, and through his persistence to find something off, quickly developed a talent for spotting inconsistencies in the taxes, guard numbers and other spending of the nobility. Having become a thorn on the nobilities side, his brother offered him a position as his steward, which Volis would have eagerly accepted, were it not for the insight of the Inquisitor. Knowing that accepting would be a death sentence, the Inquisitor sent young Volis off to be trained in Exelnar, to either become a fully fledged Inquisitor, or die trying.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Through his time in the Inquisition, Volis prides himself in uprooting the beginnings of heretical cults. Many times he has spotted some diversion of funds or people from the nobility or rich merchants, which lead him to discover illegal and heretical activities by the rich and nobles. He was given the position of Arch Inquisitor after he uncovered

Since he became Arch Inquisitor, he has been poring over reports handed over by Inquisitors, trying to make sure there are no loose ends that need tying up, and ensuring that no heretics escape the cleansing fire of Vindicta.

Retinue:

While Inquisitor Heartbrand is a formidable negotiator, diplomat, investigator and analyst, there is only so much that a single mortal man can do. To that end, as most Inquisitors, he has assembled a group of skilled individuals to help him in his duties. What little is known about them is compiled bellow:
  • "Bonecrusher" this six eyed bipedal monstrosity is the pet of the Inquisitor. Kept on a heavy chain leash, the creature rivals the Inquisitor himself in size, though its thick grey hide is much more powerful than him. Where they found one another is unknown, but Bonecrusher is blindly obedient to the Inquisitor and it appears they share a close bond. Bonecrusher almost never leaves the Inquisitors side and is known to become very agitated if separated.
  • Veda, an ex guardswoman who was the victim of some attack. She is known to be a fierce and dedicated warrior, always carrying her longbow and longsword with her. She is often seen patrolling and inspecting the grounds of the church the Inquisitor resides in, ensuring that there are no threats in the vicinity.
  • Sadal T’ahed, a tall pale bald human who prefers actions to words. He is often found in nearby taverns and inns, with a mug of ale, never drunk, but always in deep though. He speaks very rarely, and as such has become an enigma to anyone who takes interest in him or the Inquisitor.
  • Esteryas, the latest addition to the Inquisitors retinue, a scraggly old man who is never seen outside the private quarters of the Inquisitor. What use or purpose he serves is unknown.
  • Along with these people is an Entourage of about two dozen scribes who help pore through paperwork and do menial fetch and read tasks, feeding all information to the Inquisitor.
