Hyenas
Hyenas are creatures that, did the people not know better, could be assumed to be normal and native to the material plane. They mimic the Krenshar in their physical and societal structure, except they are slightly smaller in size and their fur is yellow with black spots as well as having a distinct laughter that they got from their creator. Their hunting and lifestyle betrays nothing out of the ordinary, until they reach a significant enough population in their pack, then their true nature shows as they gorge on mortal flesh until they bloat, becoming unable to move, and then give birth through a hideous process to a Gnoll at about half the size of a grown human. The forming of the gnoll and the birth is a process that is being researched, with the hopes of being able to maybe reverse-engineer, the process. (see Cult of Yeenoghu for more details)
Basic Information
Genetics and Reproduction
Hyenas reproduce sexually with one another and give birth to baby hyenas, however, when gorging themselves on the corpse of an intelligent creature and consuming enough flesh to bloat, they give birth to a gnoll.
Ecology and Habitats
Hyenas have spread through Tolhera and inhabit most places that are not very cold or very hot, however their population and habitats are constantly changing, as they are hunted down and running away from their pursuers to easier hunting grouds.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Hyenas are carnivores and will kill and eat animals to sustain themselves, however they are especially attracted to the flesh of intelligent creatures, an attraction which grows in ferocity as their numbers increase.
