Xeblisau (Zeb-lee-saahw)

Xeblisau is a highly populous nation located in Ammalion. It is most well known for its strong trade, and the culture of romance and open sexuality of its people.

Structure

Xeblisau is ruled by a monarch  elected by several great houses of the nation, and rules until their death or retirement. Most leaders tend to retire near the end of their lives, when a successor they favor is likely to be elected. The descendants of monarchs often remain politically powerful, but rarely end up inheriting leadership from their parents. The laws of Xeblisau restrict leadership of the country to a specific selection of humanoid species - those with lifespans roughly equal to humans. It is a contentious topic, but one that rarely comes up in political circles.   The current monarch of Xeblisau is Mafei Yun, elected in 3937 EC by a margin of 8 to 3. Both Mafei and her wife Sayuri Ya have been incredibly popular among the people of the nation, and though Mafei initially had strong support among the great houses, this favor has slowly dwindled. In particular she is under scrutiny for the addition of a new law granting the spouse of the monarch equal power in governance, which the great houses see as a dangerous change to tradition.

Great Houses of Xeblisau

Twelve of Xeblisau's original seventeen great houses still exist, each powerful family lines dating back for generations. These great houses are the same that decide on the country's next leader, a matter decided by a simple plurality vote. Because no house is willing to elect a leader who descends from a rival house, the vast majority of leaders elected are descended from no great house.    Several of the original great houses have fallen since Xeblisau's founding. Their names remain on registers of houses allowed to vote, but with no provable heirs still existing, their votes remain uncast.   Though these houses have existed for hundreds of years, and wield immense power in the nation, the houses have little legal difference to commoners other than their ability to vote on the next monarch. There is no formal noble class, nor noble titles other than monarch.

Demography and Population

Xeblisau is the most populous nation on the continent, and its capital is closely tied for most densely populated city along with Iccot. The vast majority of the people of the nation are Sauvian in descent, and maintain strong Sauvian traditions throughout the city.   The population of the country is split relatively evenly between dense cities and rural farmlands. The people benefit from well maintained roads into major cities as well as numerous freshwater rivers running through the land.   Xeblisau has a high birth rate compared to other countries thanks in large part to plentiful food, and the worship of gods of fertility and farming, Curae and Siher.

Religion

The people of Xeblisau primarily worship the Eosian pantheon, primarily consisting of the god of romance and fertility Curae, and his children. Primary among Curae's children is the god of farming and community Siher.   The people of Xeblisau tend to be accepting of other faiths, but have a tendency to be somewhat dismissive, and frequently try to convert those of other faiths.   In recent years, the philosophy of the Children of Oblivion has gained ground among the more rural folk of the country. The Children of Oblivion provide aid, resources, and education to villages that are more remote, or not well established enough to have a significant religious presence.   The Children of Oblivion preach that it is unnatural for deceased mortals souls to be claimed by gods, and they should instead follow the natural course of rejoining the universe in oblivion. They have close ties to the psychopomps, supernatural creatures that guide wayward souls.

Agriculture & Industry

Xeblisau is in the center of a lush and fertile region for farming. Plentiful rivers run through its grasslands, and a long coastline has created a hearty fishing industry. What the country lacks in other industrial resources, it more than makes up for in sheer abundance of food and luxury items.   Rice, beans, cocoa, and sugarcane are the primary crops, balanced with animals raised for meat and milk.

Trade & Transport

Trade in Xeblisau is booming thanks to a strong infrastructure, well maintained roads, and numerous coastal cities. The economy primarily functions with a mix of bartering and the use of coins, especially with foreigners. Haggling is a cultural expectation, and it is common for Sauvians to own and wear jewelry rather than carry numerous coins to trade with.
