Spacefarers' Superstitions

History

The customs of those who work on ships of all classes are closely linked to beliefs about Migration as explorer and protector of travelers--in some cases being their only surviving form--as well as Úlêúlê, the unknowable expanse of the void through which they travel, but with which it is impossible to communicate. Much of it is carried over from the invention of manned space flight and the use of it to move migration off-world instead of simply further south. However, space travel led to innovations, specifically in Migration's character, that in many cases are specific to traveling ships (and not to Stenza practicing migration the old fashioned way or to people who spend the season on bases due to work). On ships, emphasis is placed on the exploratory aspects of Migration's character, rather than their protector and guide aspects. This led to the development or expansion of a mischievous streak which has little attestation prior to migration into space, as well as specifically codified offerings which differ from more traditional libations as given in the planet-bound days.   That being said, migration traditions still carry over in force aboard clan ships, where Migration's Toast is a common offering and "Ȟây’eṣtîkoyæ’!" is still said. In recent times, awareness of customs from Earth have lent the season a particular character, involving lights and most specifically the wearing of lighted wreaths on the head. However, these practices are considered either a highly specific subset of ship lore or separate from it entirely and still under the body of "traditional" migration lore and practices.

Execution

Úlêúlê is unreachable. Trust only your navigation systems and algorithms. When they fail, trust your experience.   Migration may sometimes be found in the cockpit. This is a good omen. (Remember your libations, but in this case any Ale on hand is acceptable.)   Migration enjoys travel songs, especially if pups aboard the ship join in.   It is appropriate to tell stories of everywhere you have been and everything you have done (specifically, chronologically, a variety of biographical storytelling known as a "ship's way" or "ship's reckoning").   Pups are always counted among the crew despite attempting to eat every weld, ball bearing, and other small object they come across. This has the practical benefit of preventing Isolation Sickness amongst the crew and the mythologically attested benefit of potentially engaging in hospitable interactions with any Snow Pups or disguised deities that might wander aboard (which, through hospitality rules, assures the voyage's protection).   Migration is sometimes held to be the presider over stories and other time-killing activities on long journeys.   Urban legends are without a doubt entertaining, but contain more truth than you might be willing to confront at the moment. Don't forget them too easily.   Malfunctions are a common occurrence and can usually be corrected in short order. Sometimes they are caused by Migration wondering what a certain button does.
